JAS Worldwide partners with Lune to help shippers contribute to climate action

JAS Worldwide has announced its partnership with Lune.
JAS Worldwide has announced its partnership with Lune.

[ATLANTA, GA., January 16, 2024] – JAS Worldwide, a global supply chain and logistics company, has announced its partnership with Lune, a leading provider for funding high quality climate projects. This collaboration will enable JAS customers to contribute to climate projects and compensate for difficult-to-abate logistics emissions.

As the transport and logistics industry contributes approx. 11% of global CO₂ emissions, JAS sees that it has an important role to play in tackling the challenge of reducing the industry’s impact. In addition to reducing CO₂ emissions from freight, JAS aims to extend its influence beyond the logistics value chain and enable its customers to take action by contributing to impactful climate projects around the world. However, navigating this commitment with credibility poses a unique challenge, given the carbon credit market's prevalence of projects with questionable impact and limited transparency.

To enable its customers to contribute to climate projects in a credible way, JAS has selected Lune as its partner for carbon offsetting, because of its shared commitment to transparency and positive impact. By leveraging a rigorous vetting process and comprehensive six-point evaluation criteria, Lune curates a list of high quality climate projects, such as reforestation, mangroves restoration, concrete mineralization, or enhanced rock weathering. The initial projects chosen by JAS Worldwide are aligned with the Oxford Offsetting Principles best-in-class portfolio.

JAS customers will receive transparent information about the projects and their impact as well as a dedicated carbon credit certificate for completed purchases. Transparency and accountability are crucial in today’s complex and ambiguous voluntary carbon markets.

“By offering our customers not only biofuel insetting and network optimization solutions, but also offsetting opportunities through our partnership with Lune, we help them achieve their environmental goals while keeping our promise to make a positive impact.” said Andrea Goeman, SVP QHSE & Sustainability at JAS Worldwide.

“Working with JAS Worldwide, we are excited to bring a new level of integrity and clarity to end-to-end sustainable logistics. Our collaboration sets a new standard for how the logistics sector can contribute to a climate positive world,” added Erik Stadigh, Co-founder and CEO at Lune.

Driven by customer demand and incoming regulation, this partnership is a significant step for JAS Worldwide and Lune as they continue to champion sustainable practices in logistics.

JAS Worldwide, a leading global logistics provider, is proud to announce its partnership with GoodShipping.
JAS Worldwide and GoodShipping Collaborate to Advance Sustainable Logistics and Decarbonization with Sustainable Marine Biofuel

[Atlanta, Oct. 20, 2023 ] — JAS Worldwide, a leading global logistics provider, is proud to announce its partnership with GoodShipping. This collaboration is focused on promoting a more environmentally responsible future for the logistics industry. Through this strategic partnership, JAS aims to make substantial reductions in the industry's carbon footprint by helping to facilitate the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable marine biofuel solutions.

At JAS, environmental stewardship and the promotion of sustainable logistics are fundamental to our business. JAS’s investment in carbon reduction allows customers to see up to a 100% reduction in CO2e Well-to-Wake emissions when compared to their fossil fuel equivalents. This innovative approach is based on the concept of insetting. When utilizing insetting a customer chooses sustainable biofuel rather than the traditional fossil fuel. This eco-friendly biofuel is a renewable energy source that can power vessels without disrupting logistics operations.

Through the partnership with GoodShipping, JAS now has a carrier-independent solution that can be applied to any trade lane worldwide using the “one atmosphere approach” or “mass balance principle.” This means that if the biofuel supply is unavailable for the specific vessel transporting a customer’s shipment, an equivalent amount of biofuel, corresponding to the emissions generated by the shipment, is utilized in a biofuel enabled vessel. The end result is the same since the atmosphere is indifferent to which vessel is fueled.

The insetting service JAS’s customers can book facilitates the use of biofuel derived from 100% certifiable waste and residue streams. What sets this service apart is its independent audit verification process, which confirms the quality of the biofuel and ensures accurate carbon accounting. Through this approach, JAS strives to reduce actual emissions from its operations and help customers reduce Scope 3 emissions within their supply chain.

This partnership offers numerous advantages to cargo owners:

  • Simple: The mass balance principle and the blend of biofuels with conventional fossil fuels provide a carrier-independent solution with minimal disruption to logistics operations.
  • Impactful: Biofuel Insetting offers an immediate response within the same sector where emissions originate, enabling an effective reaction to global warming.
  • Credible: The utilization of biofuels aligns with global sustainability goals, and third-party audits ensure that sustainability claims are accurate and backed by credible assessments.
Andrea Goeman, SVP Sustainability, JAS Worldwide shared: "JAS Worldwide and GoodShipping are united in the mission to reduce carbon emissions to zero with Sustainable Marine Biofuel. We look forward to continuing our collaboration and to extend this decarbonization product to road transport, ensuring a comprehensive approach to sustainability in our customers' supply chain."
“We’re very happy to have started collaborating with an international player like JAS Worldwide,” says Alessandro Pierangeli, Commercial Manager at GoodShipping. Through our partnership, we can collectively offer companies a unique way to decarbonize their Scope 3 transportation emissions. We are truly excited to make a long term impact together.”

About JAS Worldwide:

JAS was founded in 1978 in Milan, Italy, and its global headquarters is located in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Over the last four decades, JAS has grown from regional roots to a global force in logistics covering all modes of transportation, including contract logistics and other sophisticated and digital-driven supply chain solutions. Today, JAS covers 100+ countries with over 7000 employees globally and continues to expand with its core culture, “People make the difference,” and its strong commitment to a sustainable future.

About GoodShipping:

GoodShipping accelerates the decarbonisation of shipping. GoodShipping enables companies to make an immediate climate impact by decarbonising their scope 3 emissions. Being world’s leading sustainable cargo initiative, GoodShipping facilitates a switch from fossil fuel to sustainable biofuel through an innovative concept called carbon insetting. This is based on the one atmosphere approach – the concept that all carbon is emitted into the same atmosphere. Any carrier running on biofuel, is a reduction of fossil fuel emissions in the atmosphere. Therefore, it doesn’t matter which carrier runs on biofuel. The independent third-party audit ensures the clients' decarbonisation commitments are delivered. GoodShipping is proud to be part of FincoEnergies. Together delivering sustainable energy solutions to propel our customers’ transition towards a better world.

The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) empowers the Transport and Logistics industry to set ambitious carbon reduction goals in line with scientific evidence, which is crucial for mitigating climate change.
SBTi and the Transport and Logistics Industry: Steering Towards Net Zero by 2050

In a world facing pressing environmental challenges, the need for carbon reduction has become a priority for industries worldwide. The Transport and Logistics sector plays a key role in global trade and commerce, and the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) serves as a framework for empowering companies within this sector to establish ambitious carbon emission reduction targets.

Let us explore the significance of SBTi and how it is shaping the future of the Transport and Logistics industry.

What is SBTi?

The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) is a collaborative initiative driven by several prominent organizations, including CDP, World Resources Institute (WRI), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Its overarching mission is to support companies in aligning their emissions reduction targets with scientific evidence to hold global warming at 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. SBTi provides a comprehensive framework for the setting and validating such targets for companies across various industries.

The Transport and Logistics Industry's Role

The Transport and Logistics industry significantly contributes to global emissions due to the substantial fuel consumption of ships, trucks, airplanes, and other vehicles within the supply chain. As such, this plays a critical role in mitigating climate change, and companies are increasingly recognizing their environmental responsibilities and have started developing carbon reduction targets.

These carbon targets can cover emissions from various scopes, including direct emissions (Scope 1), energy consumption (Scope 2), and indirect emissions from the upstream and downstream supply chain (Scope 3).

Commitment to Net-Zero by 2050

As the Transport and Logistics industry continues to transform, JAS Worldwide has proactively embraced sustainability and carbon reduction. We are fully committed to establishing a science-based target in alignment with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) aimed at achieving Net Zero emissions by the year 2050.

Through our commitment to SBTi, JAS is setting clear and measurable targets and taking tangible steps towards combatting climate change.

Recognizing our industry's role in advancing and strengthening the global economy and understanding that collective action yields a greater positive impact, we invite our business partners to join us in making strides toward a more sustainable future.

Committing to becoming net zero by 2050 -or earlier- is a step in the right direction. By leveraging the SBTi framework, our efforts contribute to a healthier planet and inspire positive change while creating value for stakeholders.

JAS has incorporated robots into its warehouse operations to enhance efficiency and productivity.
Revolutionizing Contract Logistics Facilities: Automation Solutions at JAS

In today's fast-paced world of logistics, staying ahead requires constant innovation and optimization. JAS understands the significance of utilizing cutting-edge technologies to improve efficiency and drive productivity. That's why we have fully embraced automation and seamlessly integrated robots into our warehouse operations at our Contract Logistics facilities. This includes our recently opened warehouse in Memphis, Tennessee, USA. This exciting technology benefits both our picking teams and the overall logistics process.

Enhancing Productivity: One primary advantage of incorporating robots into our warehouse operations is their ability to work alongside our picking teams, improving their productivity and efficiency. Collaborating with our human team members, these robots take on repetitive and time-consuming tasks, allowing our team members to focus on the more complex and value-added tasks. This dynamic partnership increases productivity levels, enabling us to meet customer demands quickly and accurately.

Reducing Non-Value-Added Travel Time: Deploying robots in our warehouse significantly reduces non-value-added travel time. Instead of pickers manually pushing carts and transporting goods long distances, our automated helpers efficiently transport them from the picking area to the shipping station. By reducing non-value-added travel time, we can optimize workflows and increase overall operational efficiency resulting in time and cost savings for our customers.

Versatile Performance: Our robots excel in various order scenarios, accommodating both batch picking for e-commerce orders and big orders with oversized items and high unit counts. Their versatility and adaptability make them invaluable assets in handling diverse order volumes and requirements, enabling us to meet customer demands across a wide range of industries efficiently.

Real-Time Data Visibility and Analytics: With the help of our robotic team members, we have achieved real-time data visibility and analytics. This data-driven approach allows us to optimize our operations, identify bottlenecks, and implement continuous improvements while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy and efficiency. Our teams can monitor, troubleshoot, and expand robot functionality from anywhere in the world.

At JAS, we believe that embracing automation and integrating robots into our warehouse operations is key to driving efficiency and meeting the needs of today's rapidly evolving industry. With robots as our trusted teammates, we are well-equipped to meet the needs of today, all while providing exceptional service to our valued customers.

Andrea Goeman, SVP Sustainability at JAS Worldwide
International Women’s Day interview: An Interview with Andrea Goeman

Throughout March, in honor of International Women's Day (March 8), we are celebrating some of the remarkable women at JAS. Today, we are honored to highlight Andrea Goeman, SVP Sustainability at JAS Worldwide.

What advice would you give your younger self?

I would advise my younger self to believe in yourself and be confident: Don’t let others opinions define who you are. Take them into consideration, make some adjustments and go for it.

How have female mentors/role models influenced your career?

I was lucky to work with amazing male and female colleagues in all stages of my career and believe that a respectful and open-minded work environment inspired me most. The book of former PepsiCo’s CEO Indra Nooyi “My Life in Full, Work, Familiy and our Future” is a great read about how purposeful leadership can drive corporate transformation forward.” Working with many inspiring women at JAS, I am already impressed by the openness and diversity of our organization; and the results we can achieve together.

What achievement are you most proud of while working at JAS?

Leading sustainability at JAS allows me to work with logistics experts from different cultures, regions and functions. In my first months, I experienced great commitment, work ethics and openness to new ideas, from our frontline workers to the management board. People really make the difference - I am proud to be part of the team.

How do you #EmbraceEquity?

Embracing Equity is not a nice-to-have, it’s a must-have. Diversity, Equality and Inclusion are driving both my personal and professional life. I am personally convinced that diverse teams perform better and bring value and growth to every company.

In your opinion, why is it important that more women pursue careers in the industry in the future?

The right time for women to pursue a career in logistics is now: With the growing importance of supply chain management, our sector is driving growth, innovations and sustainability transformation forward. Opportunities in the industry will continue to grow: The demand for analytical thinkers and innovative problem-solvers in freight forwarding is rising.

In honor of World Water Day, JAS Worldwide (JAS) and the Bruni Foundation today announced their partnership with charity: water to provide clean and safe water to those in need.

The theme of World Water Day 2023 is "Water for Life and Livelihoods," which helps highlight the importance of water for life, economic development, and the environment. The United Nations (UN) reports that 771 million people worldwide live without access to clean water, which is essential for the health and well-being of individuals and communities.

JAS, the Bruni Foundation, and charity: water are committed to making a difference in the lives of those affected by the global water crisis. The first phase of the partnership will deploy a $100,200 gift from the Bruni Foundation, which will fully fund two clean and safe water projects in India and Mozambique.

In Mozambique, this partnership will fund new community wells and handpumps across provinces in the Northeast of Mozambique and provide access to clean and safe water for more than 800 people. In India, the funds will support rainwater harvesting in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan, Western India, helping to provide clean and safe water access to over 250 people.

These initiatives will make a tangible impact in the lives of those in the local communities where the projects are being funded and are just the first step in the commitment to the cause.

The new 83,650-square-foot facility includes a temperature-controlled receiving dock with three dedicated dock doors leading directly into temperature-controlled areas. Within this space, there is a roughly 8,000 square foot CRT (controlled room temperature) chamber maintained at +15 to +25°C, as well as a 4,300 square foot cold room designed to handle temperature requirements of +2 to +8°C. The strategically located site is only a short distance from O'Hare International Airport, one of the largest U.S. airfreight gateways for cargo, allowing the team to keep supply chains moving.
