JAS Helps Customers Navigate Screening Mandate

JAS Aids Customers with their air cargo despite new screening mandate

July 19, 2021

JAS ORD, Dog screening demonstration in 2019

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) mandated that, by June 30th, 100% of international all-cargo aircraft flights receive the same level of security screening as cargo shipments on passenger fights.

JAS USA has been working closely with the TSA for several years to implement an in-house process for screening air cargo. As a result, JAS was one of the first freight forwarders approved to conduct trials in its major gateways using canine as a primary screening method. These canine teams can screen palletized cargo without the cargo being taken apart to screen, therefore cutting the screening process from hours to minutes.

Consequently, shipments move much faster through the supply chain with JAS taking control of the screening process and not having to rely on airlines and ground handlers who face some of the following challenges:

  • Screenings taking more time than initially expected.
  • Shipments being left behind by carriers due to incomplete screenings.
  • Some carriers only accepting pre-screened cargo.
  • Full terminals and airport facilities resulting in rejected cargo.
  • Lack of warehouse space for storing cargo as it goes through the screening process.

Over the past year, JAS USA has been working diligently to prepare for this new screening mandate and is excited to see those benefits passed on to its customers. JAS customers who need help navigating these new challenges should contact their local JAS office to learn more about how JAS keeps cargo moving.

JAS Stays Committed to Sustainability Year Around

June 5, 2021

While every June the world celebrates World Environment Day, at JAS, we are committed to sustainability year around. One way JAS does this is through our eco-friendly buildings and warehouses located throughout the world.

JAS Germany’s Extensive Green Roof:

Located just 5 minutes from the Frankfurt Airport, JAS’ multi-user warehouse in Frankfurt, Germany, is JAS’ first to feature an extensive green roof system. The green roof spans close to 11,000 sqm and is characterized by its shallow-rooted and hardy plants such as grasses and succulents. The green roof also helps with energy savings by protecting the warehouse from direct solar heat when it is hot and minimizing heat loss through the roof due to the extra insulation provided by the plants on the rooftop when it is cool.

JAS Italy Roof Top Solar Power:

When constructing the JAS Segrate site, sustainability was of high importance. Therefore, solar panels to harness sunlight and generate electricity were installed. The solar panels allow the office to replace most of its electricity usage with renewable energy, creating a more sustainable energy solution. By utilizing this energy-efficient renewable energy source, JAS is able to combat greenhouse gas emissions and reduce our collective dependence on fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas, from which traditional electricity is sourced.

As the world comes together to celebrate Earth Day this week, JAS is continuing its commitment to promote environmental sustainability by creating an environmentally friendly atmosphere within every aspect of our organization. We believe that with the implementation of sustainability globally, we can work together to effectively reduce concerns such as pollution, the use of natural resources, and harmful greenhouse gasses.

Care and Follow-Up Key to Successful Engine Transport

Transporting an engine is a delicate operation. Moving an engine via aircraft adds a layer of difficulty that requires expertise, reliability, and commitment to the aerospace sector.

Teams at JAS Mexico and JAS Spain recently partnered to complete the secure transport of an aircraft engine from Mexico City to the Madrid Airport Terminal in Spain. Engine dimensions were 450x250x255 cm. The total weight of the engine was 4,920 kgs. An engine this size required special transport arrangements and supervision during lashing to ensure the cargo’s safe arrival at its destination.

Ricardo Molinero, Operations Manager for JAS Madrid, said the teams followed a strict procedure designed to avoid damage to the engine’s inner beadings. “They are very prone to damage if lashing is not done correctly since the engine cradle must, on one hand, be firmly secured to the truck bed but allowing as well some movement, so the inner beadings won’t break,” he said.

To safeguard the engine’s delicate inner beadings, the teams adhere to the following protocol:

  • The engine was installed lengthwise in the transport vehicle.
  • The stand base was laid on the truck bed, with the caster wheels and tow bars locked in a stored position.
  • The engine/cradle and cradle/base fastenings were put in place and checked for secureness.
  • The engine installed on the cradle was attached to the shipping base and equipped with shock insulators.
  • The minimum required clearance of 4 inches between the cradle and the truck bed was verified. If clearance space is not confirmed, wood shoring must be placed beneath the transportation base side rails and nailed to the trailer bed to prevent movement that can damage the engine.
  • The shoring was secured to keep it from protruding inboard of the side rails, which can interfere with the vertical movement of the shock mounts or engine cradle.
  • The base only was attached to the trailer bed using tie-down points.

This is the third engine JAS Mexico has transported this year. It is the first time JAS Spain’s team has collaborated on a logistics job involving an engine. The engine left Mexico City on July 4 and arrived in Madrid on the afternoon of July 7. Delivery was made on July 8 per the customer’s request. “The engine was delivered timely, fulfilling our client’s tight deadline,” said Molinero.

I hope this message finds you well.

One brilliant suggestion that came from our first Virtual Branch Managers Meeting, is the desire for enhanced knowledge sharing. As the management team, we agree it is important to create more visibility when it comes to achievements across the whole subsidiary and to support that, we have created this new initiative “Branch Spotlight” each month a branch will be chosen highlighting their achievements, we aim to inspire and develop relations. This month I have chosen JAS Chicago!

Patrik Gaehwiler RVP, Midwest Region & Chicago Branch Manager Jordy Romeijn

I would like to share with you some of the advancements taking place in JAS Chicago, since January 2017 our Chicago Branch has grown immensely, we are now operating with over 65 full-time employees. I am very happy with the fact that, the majority of our managers started off as operators and have grown and developed into excellent department managers whom we rely on as an essential part of the JAS USA organization.

Early 2019, we made the decision to focus on Talent Management & Training, making it a key objective for our subsidiary, across all levels. This development has gone hand in hand with our desire to restructure the responsibilities of our department managers especially those in larger branches, no longer handling files but focusing on Operator Training and improving the quality of our service, with this alteration we are able to provide our customers with just one point of contact for each shipment, thus providing a fully comprehensive service.

Nonetheless, one of the largest developments took place this year as a result of striving to provide a quality service for our customers through the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic, our weekly Charter Flight Operations.

March 2020, the Chicago Branch developed from a mid-size branch into a major JAS hub, the Chicago Team plays an essential role in breaking down our transatlantic flight cargo and distributing within our network. I believe offering this new service has strengthened the Chicago Team and improved the way in which we operate as a subsidiary, I have observed some of the finest alignment between Sales and Operations, truly working in a cohesive and committed manner.

October 2020, we announced additional weekly Flight Operations, Chicago – Atlanta & Miami, this new service will further support customers in the Americas Region, including mid-week departures to LATAM.

With this surge in volume, we have invested in increasing our efficiency, with many suggestions coming directly from our dedicated warehouse team, which happens to be my preferred approach, Bottom-up communication. We value innovative thinking and work hard to implement where possible, optimizing our Chicago warehouse space has significantly enhanced our efficiency.

Chicago Warehouse, October 2020

We used standard gaylord boxes to pre-sort, scan and organize cargo, which consumed much of the warehouse floorspace. With increases in volumes it became necessary to optimize our warehouse space and Luis Delvalle came up with the idea of using collapsible wire containers which are lightweight, stackable, and easy to roll around. This largely reduces the need for gaylord boxes which further supports our environmental efforts as an organization.

We also had the opportunity to further invest by hiring three new salespeople, who are able to develop and support new business through our Chicago hub.
The Chicago Team is an exceptional example of a proactive Branch Manager, with a team that is dedicated, working 7 days a week to meet the needs of our customers during these trying times.

I send my deepest gratitude to you all.

A challenging year for sure, yet we cannot take for granted the knowledge and development gained, I remain optimistic for the future always, we cannot escape from the reality we live in, however I am pleased with the work we are doing, we must continue aggressively protecting and pursuing new business while remaining extremely vigilant.

I look forward to sharing in the coming months many devoted teams, working together, and committed to investing in our vision despite the ongoing pandemic, which is a true sign of greatness.
