Wine has been produced in the Iberian Peninsula for many centuries.
Throughout Portugal, there are fourteen Delimited Wine Regions. Due to unique geography of the area, a variety of quality wines suchas sparkling wines, white wines, red wines, rosé wines, and different kinds of vinegar can be found.
In 2015, Portugal’s Alentejo Region launched its award winning “Alentejo Wine Sustainability Program” (PSVA) in the region’s vineyards, in part, to promote more sustainable wine production environment.
As part of this move towards more sustainable wine production, Greencarrier Freight Services offers short sea shipping services as an innovative transportation alternative to road freight.
The service operates from Porto in Portugal to the Nordic region. Cargo for the Nordic market is consolidated from all over Spain and Portugal, where it is then shipped to Gothenburg for further distribution in the Nordics.
“This sustainable service option is a way for shippers to reduce direct emissions but also mitigate congested roads and shortage of drivers. It is our ambition to make it simple for our clients to switch to sustainable alternatives without having to recreate their entire supply chain, says Ari Malvela, Head of Road Freight.
Less than container load (LCL) allows you to ship smaller quantities more frequently. With weekly departures and fast transit times it is easier than ever to build supply chains that are both efficient and sustainable.
“Can we afford not to become more sustainable? This logistics solution is part of our initiative “Green Solutions” and reduces your environmental footprint up to 80% when compared to using road freight. One feeder vessel carries the equivalent of 500 truckloads, reducing the pressure on congested roads as well as the environment,” says Stefan Larsen, Ocean Freight Manager.

More than 3 billion people worldwide live in rural areas. Road freight is the only mode of transport that can reach the most remote places across the globe. You never have to compromise flexibility and sustainability when shipping large volumes of goods over long or short distance.
Our road transport solutions serve Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. We leverage our extensive knowledge of the market and our independent positioning to create the perfect road freight solution.
What is road freight?
Road freight involves transporting goods from one location to another. Moving products via road freight is one of the oldest and most common delivery modes. Sometimes road freight is used in conjunction with air or sea freight methods to provide greater flexibility with delivery times.
There are two types of road freight:
What are the advantages of transporting by road freight?
Range and flexibility are two of the biggest advantages of transporting by road freight. When flexibility is your top priority, road freight is the only transport mode capable of reaching into the most rural areas. Regardless of whether you have LTL or FTL needs, road freight is the most flexible way to handle schedules and volumes.
Besides adaptability, the other benefits of choosing road freight shipping include:
Road freight = the perfect green solution
Road freight can be made both cost-efficient and eco-friendly. Loading goods directly into vehicles and transporting them straight to their destination reduces the risk of delays along the transport chain. Eliminating the need to stop at distribution terminals along the way speeds up delivery while keeping your shipment as green as possible.

Over time, the volume of goods being transported on European roads has steadily increased, leading to congested roads, delays, and unnecessary costs. As shippers look to avoid these issues, many are considering short sea shipping as a viable solution.
What is short sea shipping?
Short sea shipping is essentially container movement within Europe, but with a short time on the sea. Short sea shipping is an excellent alternative to road freight. However, it is not a matter of dismantling road transport. It is about environmentally smart alternatives that improve existing supply chains.

Cost savings is no longer the only top priority for companies looking for outsourcing partners. More so, they want a partner who can provide the expertise and knowledge not found in-house. Logistics is a core competency, and also the biggest reason companies choose to outsource their logistics activities: It allows them to focus on their core business. This is precisely what one of our customers did.
In need of a qualified and experienced customs broker
In 2007, an international company, best known for its leading technology in the power, renewable energy, aviation, and healthcare industries, reached out to us. The company was struggling with custom formalities for shipments from China to Latvia. They were in need of a qualified and experienced customs broker that could handle the complex procedures and formalities for their large goods volumes. Together with the company, we looked into the possibilities, and a collaboration was initiated that would turn into a long-lasting relationship.
Logistics as a core competency
In 2018, the company re-nominated us as their customs broker. This time, the scope was a bit wider. Our customer is a large international company with businesses all over the world and large goods volumes that need to be moved across borders. Instead of employing their own logistics experts, they wanted to outsource their customs brokerage to us. Logistics being our core competency, this was a perfect match.
Providing our expert knowledge in customs brokerage
Two of our logistics experts would dedicate their resources exclusively to our customer’s account and work in their name. Thanks to our previous collaboration, we already knew the ins and outs of the company and its import and export requirements. After closing the agreement, including strict disclosure requirements and confidentiality rules, our logistics experts were ready to get to work.
Greencarrier Freight Services took care of customs procedures and formalities, making sure the shipments met all standards and regulations for import and export as well as requirements for customs clearance. We handled all the necessary documentation, duties, taxes, and payments.
Managing the cargo flow from A to Z
In 2020, the company reached out to us once again. They had a similar project in one of the CIS countries and needed our help. However, this time, they wanted us to handle customs procedures and formalities and manage their entire cargo flow from A to Z. This included all transport modes and multiple trade lanes. It also required logistics experts that could speak English and Russian fluently working in international teams.
Supply chain management is a complicated process even under the best of conditions. When a tropical storm occurs, the process is made even more complex as the extreme weather can not only wreak havoc on homes and buildings; but, the subsequent high winds and flooding, can disrupt and delay freight transportation, potentially causing supply chain delays and failures. As tropical storm season begins, it is important to plan ahead for adverse weather events to minimize potential repercussions.
With the start of tropical storm season having arrived, it is important to be prepared for whatever disruptions severe weather might bring. Whether it is developing a contingency plan long before extreme weather conditions occur or rerouting cargo and utilizing air cargo options when severe weather occurs, JAS can help keep your supply chain running smoothly. To make sure you are ready for tropical storm season, contact your local JAS office.
Being strategically located in all major South African cities, JAS is well positioned to offer full supply chain solutions which can be tailor made as a result of our advanced information management systems being utilized globally.
