Beyond the Numbers: Maria Limberg's Holistic Approach to Finance and Leadership

Maria Limberg considers herself “more than just an accountant.” “Finance is pretty basic, but it’s more than just the numbers,” she explains. What sets Maria apart is her holistic approach to finance. She recognizes the importance of deep industry knowledge, asserting that, for her, understanding the intricacies of logistics and supply chain is crucial to accurately interpreting financial data.

She hasn’t always been an expert at crunching numbers for logistics companies though.

After studying finance for four years, she found herself navigating a tough job market and eventually started at a call center as a debt collector. The work was grueling, and she knew she wasn’t putting her talents to use. So, when the role of a Finance Assistant at a logistics company presented itself, she took a leap of faith and accepted. “It wasn’t the type of role or industry I initially saw myself in, but it seemed better than working for a collection agency,” she reminisces.

Despite her initial reservations, Maria embraced the role and quickly adopted a deep interest in understanding the 'how' and the 'what' that drive supply chains forward. What began as a leap of faith blossomed into a career where Maria found herself as a leader and “voice of reason” for many projects and initiatives.

While one might assume that being a woman in finance in an already male-dominated industry would come with its obstacles, Maria acknowledges she is lucky that she hasn’t felt the pressure of any of those stigmas. “My approach has always been, do the work you know how to do, work hard, and appreciation will come. I’ve always felt that support,” she reflects.

This constant support coupled with her tenacious and unrelenting spirit has enabled her to drive innovation and automation, often advocating for solutions where others initially did not see the benefit. She has played a crucial role in revolutionizing finance processes and enhancing efficiency within her team and beyond.

Alongside her dedication to invention and efficiency lies a passion for mentorship and leadership.  Maria's leadership principles revolve around collaboration and empowerment – as she knows firsthand how empowerment can help guide one’s path. In the past, Maria has worked as a mentor for new residents of Sweden, helping international professionals navigate the job search process in tandem with learning the norms of the Swedish culture. “It’s the cultural things that these very educated and experienced professionals need help with. They are very qualified, but even advising on how long to wait to call back for a job have been bits of advice that have made a big impact,” she shares. For her teams, she prioritizes this same environment of transparency where team members feel valued and encouraged to voice their opinions.

Maria's positive attitude and resilience are evident. She emphasizes the importance of cultural alignment and teamwork in overcoming obstacles and driving success. Beyond her professional endeavors, Maria finds fulfillment in her role as a mother to two sons, actively participating in their extracurricular activities. “If I’m not at the office, I’m at a game,” she mentions with a smile.

Her journey epitomizes resilience, passion, and the transformative power of taking a leap of faith. So now, when people ask Maria, “Why logistics,” her answer is, “Why not logistics?”

Human rights and sustainable supply chain management is crucial in our increasingly interconnected world.
Human Rights in Logistics and the Supply Chain

The importance of human rights in transportation and logistics cannot be emphasized enough in a world where global supply chains connect almost every corner of the world. Intricately linked with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the broader sustainability framework, this essential aspect guides us towards a fairer, more equitable world.

Human Rights: A Compass for Ethical Progress

Human rights generally encompass the fundamental rights and freedoms everyone should enjoy, irrespective of nationality, gender, ethnicity, or other distinguishing factors. These rights include the right to life, security, education, work, and more. They serve as a compass guiding our ethical progress in modern society, forming the foundation of a shared vision of justice, equality, and dignity.

The Supply Chain and Its Global Impact

A Supply Chain is a sequence of processes involved in producing and distributing a product and often stretches across the globe. Products, raw materials, and components travel thousands of miles to reach consumers. These highly developed supplier networks exemplify human innovation but also represent an ethical challenge.

The global nature of the supply chain often means that products cross through regions with varying levels of respect for human rights. This poses an imminent risk to human rights, whether through exploitative labor practices, human trafficking, environmental degradation, or other infringements. Recognizing and addressing these challenges is crucial for businesses committed to sustainable practices.

The Role of SDGs and Sustainable Supply Chain Management

The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) serve as a framework for a more sustainable future. Among the 17 goals, several are closely tied to respecting human rights within the supply chain. At JAS Worldwide, we focus on SDGs 8 and 12 in this regard. Goal 8 emphasizes Decent Work and Economic Growth, which means ensuring ethical and fair employment practices throughout the supply chain. Goal 12 highlights Responsible Consumption and production, encompassing adherence to human rights and ethical standards in manufacturing and sourcing.

Sustainability in business is based on three key dimensions: Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG). The social aspect, which includes human rights, is as essential as the other two. At JAS Worldwide, our commitment to safeguarding human rights is not only a legal obligation but a core part of our Code of Business Conduct, Supplier Code of Conduct, Policies, and Business Practices. JAS recognizes that a sustainable supply chain upholds workers' rights, maintains safe working conditions, and minimizes any negative impact on local communities and the environment.

The Path Forward

This commitment revolves around the principle that the movement of goods in transportation and logistics should not compromise individual dignity and well-being. In our increasingly interconnected world, the impact of our actions extends far beyond the surface. By protecting human rights, we progress toward a sustainable future. This involves crafting our supply chain, along with our partnerships with customers and suppliers, as a moral compass to uphold human rights, combat global issues like human trafficking, and prevent other infringements on a global scale.

Åsa Andersson, Ocean Export Specialist, JAS Sweden
"It is gratifying to find the best solutions for our customers"

JAS’ weekly Less-than-Container Load (LCL) service from the Port of Gothenburg, Sweden (GOT) to Charleston, South Carolina, USA (CHS) is up and running.

With the global maritime market continuing to experience demand vs. capacity challenges, port congestion, and equipment imbalance, LCL services provide an opportunity to optimize your supply chain. These services are designed to provide the flexibility needed to keep your supply chain moving while offering cost savings when compared to air freight. Our dedicated LCL team members have the expertise to support your business while providing the best LCL service solution.

Please meet our Gothenburg to Charleston LCL service expert, Åsa Andersson, from JAS Sweden in Helsingborg.

Hello Åsa!

What is your role at JAS Worldwide Sweden?

For the past five years, I have worked as an Ocean Export Specialist at the Helsingborg branch in Sweden. As an LCL expert, I focus on service from Gothenburg to Charleston. This includes container planning, maintaining contact with the shipping lines, issuing required documents for shipping goods to the US, and keeping in close contact with my JAS Charleston colleagues.

What is the advantage of having LCL service from Gothenburg in Sweden to Charleston in the US?

The reason why we’ve chosen to ship from Gothenburg port in Sweden is because it is the largest port in the Nordics. There we have a contracted and reliable terminal and it’s well located for goods from both northern and southern Sweden.

And why do we ship to Charleston in the US?

JAS in Charleston has its own terminal, which means that we have control over the cargo operations there, and with Charleston is ideally located for moving goods to their final destinations.

What are the benefits of an LCL service between Gothenburg and Charleston?

With this service not only is JAS able to provide efficient transit times between Gothenburg and Charleston but we also maintain control of the goods from sender to recipient. At the same time we provide a good rate overview because we collect the goods.

Has shipping goods from the Nordics to the US changed after the Pandemic and if so, how?

I feel the interest in shipping goods to the US has increased since the Pandemic as we are seeing more demand for shipping services.

What challenges have you experienced after the Pandemic?

The after effect of the Pandemic and the concern that prevails globally at the moment means that there is still a risk of shipping line changing sailing schedules with short notice.

What is important to think about when shipping goods to the US?

Since the US has special requirements for sending goods there, it is important that you, as an exporter, have extra control over delivery conditions, what broker you choose, and who does the ISF filing. Everything must be in place before the goods are shipped; otherwise, there may be hefty fines at the destination, which could have been avoided.

What do you like about your job, and what do you find most rewarding?

No day is alike – that's something I find attractive about my job. I have been in the business for 35 years now. I love what I do and enjoy working with my nice colleagues across Sweden and the US.

It is gratifying to find the best solutions for our customers and to experience that the customer is satisfied.

Thank you, Åsa!

JAS Spain Transports Sculpture Set for the United Nations 77th Anniversary Ceremony

JAS Spain recently had the opportunity to partner once again with renowned Spanish artist Cristobal Gabarrón in moving the sculpture set Enlightened Universe on time and in perfect shape for its central role in celebrating the United Nations 77th Anniversary in Valletta, Malta.

The sculpture set was sent under tight delivery deadlines from Spain to Malta via sea. It was then delivered to St. George's Square (Pjazza San Gorg) in the heart of Valletta, Malta. The sculpture was then mounted and exhibited. Those attending the opening ceremony included Owen Bonnici, Malta Minister of Culture; Ian Borg, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Clayton Bartolo, Minister of Tourism; and the artist himself, Mr. Cristobal Gabarrón.

Enlightened Universe, an interactive sculpture, was originally created by Gabarrón in 2015 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the United Nations. The stainless-steel sculpture is made up of a 20-foot sphere surrounded by a spiral of 70 life-size figures holding hands. In total, the sculpture weighs 24 tons, and the up to 6’5” figures represent the world’s diversity and together honor the United Nations’ core values.

About JAS Spain

JAS Spain, headquartered in Madrid, was founded in 2010.Currently, it is one of the most dynamic logistics companies in the country, specializing in freight forwarding and supply chain solutions.

The most rural areas in the world rely on road freight to transport goods from your warehouse to their doorstep.
Green Solutions for Road Freight Transport

More than 3 billion people worldwide live in rural areas. Road freight is the only mode of transport that can reach the most remote places across the globe. You never have to compromise flexibility and sustainability when shipping large volumes of goods over long or short distance.

Our road transport solutions serve Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. We leverage our extensive knowledge of the market and our independent positioning to create the perfect road freight solution.

What is road freight?

Road freight involves transporting goods from one location to another. Moving products via road freight is one of the oldest and most common delivery modes. Sometimes road freight is used in conjunction with air or sea freight methods to provide greater flexibility with delivery times.

There are two types of road freight:

  • Less Than Truckload (LTL) is common for smaller size cargo that can’t fill a truck on its own. LTL shipments can combine to fill a truckload and save you money.
  • Full Truck Load (FTL) is used for shipments sizes large enough to fill an entire truck. FTL also can be used to move goods on a time-sensitive schedule even if the truck isn’t full.

What are the advantages of transporting by road freight?

Range and flexibility are two of the biggest advantages of transporting by road freight. When flexibility is your top priority, road freight is the only transport mode capable of reaching into the most rural areas. Regardless of whether you have LTL or FTL needs, road freight is the most flexible way to handle schedules and volumes.

Besides adaptability, the other benefits of choosing road freight shipping include:

  • Door-to-door service. It doesn’t matter where the delivery needs to go. Road freight is the most efficient way to move cargo door-to-door in any area, including the most rural locations.
  • Maximum traceability. GPS and other fleet management software allows for the easy location and tracking of cargo along the route. The real-time information provided allows you to anticipate problems and quickly find solutions.
  • Speed. Other means of transportation might be faster, but road freight is more agile, which can be important when moving fragile cargo to the most remote areas.
  • Sustainability. Sophisticated and energy-efficient trucking solutions help you fulfill sustainability goals. You can rely on a fleet of eco-friendly trucks with high-technology advancements that meet EU standards for decreased emissions. A telematics system improves key areas like reduced idle time, driving within economy, cruise control, and engine load time.

Road freight = the perfect green solution

Road freight can be made both cost-efficient and eco-friendly. Loading goods directly into vehicles and transporting them straight to their destination reduces the risk of delays along the transport chain. Eliminating the need to stop at distribution terminals along the way speeds up delivery while keeping your shipment as green as possible.

If you’re looking for fast, reliable, and eco-friendly transportation method, reach out to your local sales representative to discuss solutions today.

Preparing for Hurricanes, Typhoons, and Monsoons

Under the best of circumstances, supply chain management can be a complex process. It can be even more complicated during the tropical storm season when the risk of monsoons, typhoons, and hurricanes peaks. These tropical storms create high winds and flooding, disrupting and delaying freight transportation, which can potentially cause supply chain failures and revenue loss. While severe weather is not something that can be controlled, there are several ways that you can ensure a resilient supply chain and minimize potential disruptions.

  1. Know How to Prioritize Your Freight: The severe weather associated with tropical storms can shut down ports and airports. When they do open back up, capacity and may be limited, and there may also be extensive backlogs. By knowing what freight is most important, you can help prevent further disruptions downstream.
  2. Plan for Inventory Disruptions: During the peak of tropical storm season, it can be wise to plan for additional inventory to be on hand if your supply chain is disrupted due to significant port and airport closures and delays.
  3. Watch the Weather: Taking a proactive approach to monitoring the weather during tropical storm season is vital. It allows you to stay well-informed of impending severe weather that might impact shipment delivery. While forecasts change at a moment’s notice, it is essential that you are aware of the weather forecast and any precautionary measures taken locally, such as port and airport closures and shelter-in-place orders.
  4. Utilize Technology to Increase Supply Chain Visibility: In the event of severe weather, maintaining supply chain visibility and real-time access to information about paused and canceled shipments is vital. By maintaining supply chain visibility, you can more easily identify potential problems, allowing you to make early and informed decisions that can help keep your supply chains running smoothly.
  5. Maintain a Line of Communication: When severe weather occurs, it is important to maintain a clear line of communication with your service providers. This means ensuring that your provider knows which cargo is of the highest priority and giving as much warning as possible about a needed shipment as canceled flights and closed ports can delay shipment and reduce capacity.

With tropical storm season upon us, it is important to be prepared for whatever disruptions severe weather might bring. Whether it is developing a contingency plan long before severe weather hits or rerouting cargo and utilizing air cargo options when severe weather occurs, JAS can help keep your supply chain running smoothly. To make sure you are ready for the upcoming season, contact your local JAS office.

JAS Supports Countries Reopening Around the World

In today’s environment, shippers are faced with numerous challenges, from the immediate need to replenish drastically reduced inventory levels to budgeting logistics costs in a highly unpredictable environment. Blank sailings, carrier solvency, and steadily building port congestion is resulting in increased supply chain risk and lead time fluctuations. Global air cargo capacity has been reduced by over 25% making access to space more constrained due to overall demand and increased dwell time due to testing and customs inspections of PPE goods.

JAS is working closely with our customers to offer solutions that balance planning with responsiveness and agility, while working to provide service options that mitigate the increased costs and risks that exist with current market conditions.

Our Flight Operations solutions address the immediate and urgent needs of our customers. We have scheduled weekly flights from the following areas:

China to the USA with connections to Latin America

Europe to the USA with connections to Latin America

USA to Europe

China to Europe

Additional flights will be added as needed.

JAS SEA-AIR services provide an alternative solution to customers requiring shorter lead times than traditional ocean freight while providing a lower cost option to air freight. We currently offer hubs in Singapore and Korea that connect Asia with the rest of the world.

For traditional ocean FCL and LCL services, our ocean team aligns our carrier allocations and schedules with our customers’ forecasts. Services such as container and order management offer additional value to our standard ocean freight services.

While our current priority is to work with your immediate needs, we do not want to lose sight of the need for long-term planning strategies so please contact us at info@jas.com or reach out to your local JAS representative for more information.

JAS Supports the Medical Industry

On March 31st the HARTMANN GROUP began utilizing JAS’ charted flight operations to facilitate the supply of masks throughout Europe. Based in Heidenheim, Germany, HARTMANN is a leading provider of medical and hygiene products, with its core expertise being in wound treatment, infection prevention, surgical supplies, and personal healthcare.

HARTMANN turned to JAS to help it supply critically needed N95 masks to the governments of Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.  These shipments are flown by JAS from Shanghai to Frankfurt for distribution to not only government entities, but also to pharmacies for wider distribution to non-governmental organizations and the public at large.

JAS continues to leverage its expertise in chartered flight operations, export and import clearance, and general distribution services for HARTMANN as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to put pressure on supply chains throughout the globe. JAS is committed to supporting efforts of customers like HARTMANN as they work to provide medical supplies when and where they are needed most.

When asked to comment on PPE supply chain challenges, Thomas-Garry Stiller, Senior VP of Procurement at HARTMANN remarked, “Sourcing those masks is one thing, but how to get them to Europe? Answer: JAS.”

JAS offers ongoing chartered flight operations between Shanghai and the cities of Frankfurt, Milan, and Chicago. In support of these air corridors, JAS also maintains distribution networks via its locations in the United States, Latin America, and Europe.
