Green Solutions for Road Freight Transport

Flexibility + Sustainability = Forward-Thinking Transportation

By

The most rural areas in the world rely on road freight to transport goods from your warehouse to their doorstep.
The most rural areas in the world rely on road freight to transport goods from your warehouse to their doorstep.

More than 3 billion people worldwide live in rural areas. Road freight is the only mode of transport that can reach the most remote places across the globe. You never have to compromise flexibility and sustainability when shipping large volumes of goods over long or short distance.

Our road transport solutions serve Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. We leverage our extensive knowledge of the market and our independent positioning to create the perfect road freight solution.

What is road freight?

Road freight involves transporting goods from one location to another. Moving products via road freight is one of the oldest and most common delivery modes. Sometimes road freight is used in conjunction with air or sea freight methods to provide greater flexibility with delivery times.

There are two types of road freight:

  • Less Than Truckload (LTL) is common for smaller size cargo that can’t fill a truck on its own. LTL shipments can combine to fill a truckload and save you money.
  • Full Truck Load (FTL) is used for shipments sizes large enough to fill an entire truck. FTL also can be used to move goods on a time-sensitive schedule even if the truck isn’t full.

What are the advantages of transporting by road freight?

Range and flexibility are two of the biggest advantages of transporting by road freight. When flexibility is your top priority, road freight is the only transport mode capable of reaching into the most rural areas. Regardless of whether you have LTL or FTL needs, road freight is the most flexible way to handle schedules and volumes.

Besides adaptability, the other benefits of choosing road freight shipping include:

  • Door-to-door service. It doesn’t matter where the delivery needs to go. Road freight is the most efficient way to move cargo door-to-door in any area, including the most rural locations.
  • Maximum traceability. GPS and other fleet management software allows for the easy location and tracking of cargo along the route. The real-time information provided allows you to anticipate problems and quickly find solutions.
  • Speed. Other means of transportation might be faster, but road freight is more agile, which can be important when moving fragile cargo to the most remote areas.
  • Sustainability. Sophisticated and energy-efficient trucking solutions help you fulfill sustainability goals. You can rely on a fleet of eco-friendly trucks with high-technology advancements that meet EU standards for decreased emissions. A telematics system improves key areas like reduced idle time, driving within economy, cruise control, and engine load time.

Road freight = the perfect green solution

Road freight can be made both cost-efficient and eco-friendly. Loading goods directly into vehicles and transporting them straight to their destination reduces the risk of delays along the transport chain. Eliminating the need to stop at distribution terminals along the way speeds up delivery while keeping your shipment as green as possible.

If you’re looking for fast, reliable, and eco-friendly transportation method, reach out to your local sales representative to discuss solutions today.

Jordy Romeijn, Pharma & Healthcare Customer Experience Director

JAS Worldwide EMEA is pleased to announce the appointment of Jordy Romeijn to the position of  EMEA Pharma & Healthcare Customer Experience Director as of 09 May 2022. Working in this pivotal role from his home base in the Netherlands, together with the region’s Pharma & Healthcare teams Jordy will champion customer experience and operational excellence for the region.

Jordy has more than 20 years’ experience in the logistics industry, starting when he was just 15 years old, and has hands-on experience in nearly every aspect of freight forwarding, “from warehouse to sales and everything in between.” He joined JAS in  Rotterdam in 2007, and was quickly promoted to Branch Manager. After guiding them through significant growth, in 2017 Jordy relocated to the USA to manage the JAS Chicago branch, which at the time was “fairly small” in the JAS organization. Fast forward five years, under Jordy’s leadership the JAS Chicago branch is now the largest in the US, handling multiple own freighters per week and preparing for the grand opening of a new state-of -the-art 80,000 square foot pharma and healthcare logistics facility in summer 2022.

Of his appointment, Jordy says: “During my years working with JAS I have witnessed the company continuously grow and develop itself – JAS today is vastly different then JAS 16 years ago. My long tenure and experience on both sides of the Atlantic will allow me to contribute toward growing the Pharma & Healthcare vertical, and I am truly looking forward to this exciting new opportunity.”

JAS is delighted to welcome Jordy to this new position and is confident he will play a key role in upholding and continuously improving the service quality provided to our valued clients as we continue to invest in the pharma and healthcare logistics industry.

JAS Projects is First to Successfully Operate Through New Port in Singapore

JAS Projects is excited to start the new year with a successful delivery of 8,800 FRT incl. heavy lifts, up to 300 metric tons, to Singapore. On behalf of a valued customer, a customized transportation solution was developed by JAS Projects Germany in collaboration with the JAS Projects' teams in Singapore, Shanghai, and Seoul. Utilizing the vast JAS network and using the collaboration and expert teamwork that JAS is known for to make sure our customers are successful.

JAS  is proud to be the 1st logistics service provider operating via the newly built Chawan jetty in Jurong Port Singapore. JAS Projects was more than happy to meet and exceed those requirements. With shipping becoming more complicated everyday, having a team of experts on your side makes all the difference, and at JAS People Make the Difference.

JAS began working on this project during March in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and are now at the end of 2020 and almost to the completion of this project. Throughout the project, even with all the aberrant forecasts on shipping dates, JAS found and created solutions to ensure our customer's needs are continuously met, no matter the circumstances.

JAS Ensures Safety of Live Chicks

In May of 2020 longtime JAS partner Aviagen®  and sister company Hubbard® required a large shipment of live, day-old chicks be transported to Bangladesh from the United States and France. These chicks needed to arrive the next day to their destination, safely and in good health. With the successful delivery of the chicks to Aviagen's customer in Bangladesh the broiler breeding stock will produce 110,393,893 kilograms (243,376,874 pounds) of chicken meat for the people living in Bangladesh.

This important shipment had to go out amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions it has brought to the shipping industry, as well as required expertise to navigate the mine field of other special requirements in order to successfully deliver this live cargo next day, safely, and efficiently.

JAS Live Animals regularly organizes airfreight shipments to various destinations, and this shipment was important to Aviagen and marked a historic shipment for the company. Quoted from Aviagen "Several characteristics contribute to the historic nature of this shipment. First, it represents the most grandparent and parent stock chicks ever to be exported internationally in a single shipment. And it is the first-time multiple brands of multi-generational chicks destined for different poultry companies have shared an international flight."  JAS is honored to be part of such a historical event in the Live Animal Industry and to continue to work with Aviagen on future shipments.

This shipment required specialized pallets to be built, as well as overnight feeding to be done for the chicks on their long journey. The pallets, built in the USA, had to merge with the pallets built in France, by a competitor. Thanks to the dedication of the night shift, through their feedings and follow-ups the chicks were under constant care, and thanks to the partnership and clear communication between the customers, forwarders, and airlines this critical shipment was successful.

“This is really where the JAS motto People Make the Difference comes to life. Passion! Passion! Passion! We are dealing with live animals and not general cargo, you must have passion, dedication, and commitment to the cause. And those are the qualities that proudly makes JAS different from the competition, to the point where it seems like you are making the most incredible accomplishments for your customers, but for you it simply has become your normal daily routine.” JAS Live Animals Division Manager, Carlo Rebuffi

JAS is proud to have a strong relationship with Aviagen, handling shipments like this for them for nearly 2 decades. Starting in the United States, JAS worked hard to gain their trust and earn credibility with them, expanding into Europe and gaining the needed expertise to ship such a commodity as live animals to the point that JAS developed its own Live Animals division. This division continues to grow and has a dedicated team of experts willing to go over and beyond to deserve the business of our partners.

JAS Supports Countries Reopening Around the World

In today’s environment, shippers are faced with numerous challenges, from the immediate need to replenish drastically reduced inventory levels to budgeting logistics costs in a highly unpredictable environment. Blank sailings, carrier solvency, and steadily building port congestion is resulting in increased supply chain risk and lead time fluctuations. Global air cargo capacity has been reduced by over 25% making access to space more constrained due to overall demand and increased dwell time due to testing and customs inspections of PPE goods.

JAS is working closely with our customers to offer solutions that balance planning with responsiveness and agility, while working to provide service options that mitigate the increased costs and risks that exist with current market conditions.

Our Flight Operations solutions address the immediate and urgent needs of our customers. We have scheduled weekly flights from the following areas:

China to the USA with connections to Latin America

Europe to the USA with connections to Latin America

USA to Europe

China to Europe

Additional flights will be added as needed.

JAS SEA-AIR services provide an alternative solution to customers requiring shorter lead times than traditional ocean freight while providing a lower cost option to air freight. We currently offer hubs in Singapore and Korea that connect Asia with the rest of the world.

For traditional ocean FCL and LCL services, our ocean team aligns our carrier allocations and schedules with our customers’ forecasts. Services such as container and order management offer additional value to our standard ocean freight services.

While our current priority is to work with your immediate needs, we do not want to lose sight of the need for long-term planning strategies so please contact us at info@jas.com or reach out to your local JAS representative for more information.

JAS Supports the Medical Industry

On March 31st the HARTMANN GROUP began utilizing JAS’ charted flight operations to facilitate the supply of masks throughout Europe. Based in Heidenheim, Germany, HARTMANN is a leading provider of medical and hygiene products, with its core expertise being in wound treatment, infection prevention, surgical supplies, and personal healthcare.

HARTMANN turned to JAS to help it supply critically needed N95 masks to the governments of Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.  These shipments are flown by JAS from Shanghai to Frankfurt for distribution to not only government entities, but also to pharmacies for wider distribution to non-governmental organizations and the public at large.

JAS continues to leverage its expertise in chartered flight operations, export and import clearance, and general distribution services for HARTMANN as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to put pressure on supply chains throughout the globe. JAS is committed to supporting efforts of customers like HARTMANN as they work to provide medical supplies when and where they are needed most.

When asked to comment on PPE supply chain challenges, Thomas-Garry Stiller, Senior VP of Procurement at HARTMANN remarked, “Sourcing those masks is one thing, but how to get them to Europe? Answer: JAS.”

JAS offers ongoing chartered flight operations between Shanghai and the cities of Frankfurt, Milan, and Chicago. In support of these air corridors, JAS also maintains distribution networks via its locations in the United States, Latin America, and Europe.

JAS at Kyalami

JAS Motorsport Logistics in collaboration with JAS South Africa were nominated as lead logistics providers for the Kyalami 9 Hour event held as part of the Intercontinental GT Series which visited our shores in November 2019. Our teams were revved up to be involved in this iconic event, which last took place at Kyalami in 1982, and surely will once again become a key event in the South African Motorsport calendar.

A few key statistics on what JAS was tasked to handle for the event:

  • A total of 41 containers carrying race cars, spares and timing equipment forwarded via ocean freight by JAS from various countries to South Africa, entering through various ports. Then exported again onward to different countries for the next events in the series.
  • Airfreight import & export of complete race cars, spares, accessories and equipment from and to various parts of the globe leading up to and after the event.
  • Obtaining embargo release from the customs authorities so that all containers would be inspected in one location, which would be the lay down area managed by JAS in the Kyalami track precinct. This for both imports, as well as export inspections.
  • Successfully managing a mix of customs requirements, some teams shipping under ATA Carnet, others with commercial invoices, for which provisional payments had to be made as well as acquitted with customs, all done in record time.
  • On site operations included 4 x crane trucks and multiple tridem axle truck tractor combinations to move a total of 54 containers from the lay down area to various points around the pit lane and behind the main building for teams to be present and unload their containers.
  • All containers were moved, placed, unpacked and operations set up completed within 2 days, and the same applied for loading out again.
  • Senior representatives from JAS Motorsport Logistics were on site for the full duration of the lead up to, as well as during and strike down of the event to provide support services from a logistics perspective to the teams as well as for the organizers.

The entire event went off smoothly, something JAS is extremely proud of.  People continue to make the difference.

Projects for Mozambique

JAS Projects Italy is proud to announce that they have successfully performed shipments for approx. 10.000 FRT. in 2019. The majority of these shipments came from Italy to Mozambique.

All cargo has been moved via regular FCL service by dry containers and special equipment, in particular, open top and flat rack out of gauge. Many shipments consist of on ro-ro cargo such as Terex Cranes and Merlo Machines.

These shipment contracts are related to the Mozambique LNG Projects, for the construction of 2 onshore LNG trains in Afungi (Palma).

With the success of these many shipments JAS is excited to see JAS Projects continue to assist in Afungi projects in the future. There will be new and interesting perspectives for 2020 as JAS Projects Italy plans to bid for the main Tender for another Afungi Project.
