JAS Hong Kong, with support from partners, repurposed donated factory fabric samples to clothe adults and children in need, reducing fashion waste.

A dedicated team of JAS Hong Kong employees, led by Sustainability Ambassador Gary Ferreira, came together to make an impact in the lives of those less fortunate. Their mission? To repurpose factory fabric samples generously donated by a department store and instead give them to adults and children in need – the impact was twofold – it clothed adults and children in need and reduced waste sent to a landfill.

The JAS employees started by detaching company labels from each item. They then sorted and packaged the fabrics to ensure the garments could be easily distributed to charitable organizations in Hong Kong and the Philippines. The act of kindness was met with smiling and thankful faces.

This collaboration not only helped address material needs but also contributed to reducing fashion waste. This initiative underscores how corporate entities can address social and environmental challenges by leveraging existing resources and expertise.

We are grateful for our retail partner, Inland Corporation, and the Bruni Foundation for their support in ensuring each item reached its intended recipients with care and efficiency. Such achievements are only possible through collective cross-industry efforts.

This initiative is part of the Bruni Foundation's 'Pay it Forward' program, which empowers JAS employees to become ambassadors of change by actively supporting social and environmental causes. Throughout the year, the Bruni Foundation, an integral part of JAS, will support various global projects, primarily focusing on these United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Quality Education, No Poverty, Clean Water and Sanitation, and Zero Hunger. Yet, understanding the current challenges towards the environment and the well-being of societies, the Bruni Foundation also actively supports initiatives that promote responsible environmental stewardship.

Human Rights in Logistics and the Supply Chain

Human rights and sustainable supply chain management is crucial in our increasingly interconnected world.
Human rights and sustainable supply chain management is crucial in our increasingly interconnected world.

The importance of human rights in transportation and logistics cannot be emphasized enough in a world where global supply chains connect almost every corner of the world. Intricately linked with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the broader sustainability framework, this essential aspect guides us towards a fairer, more equitable world.

Human Rights: A Compass for Ethical Progress

Human rights generally encompass the fundamental rights and freedoms everyone should enjoy, irrespective of nationality, gender, ethnicity, or other distinguishing factors. These rights include the right to life, security, education, work, and more. They serve as a compass guiding our ethical progress in modern society, forming the foundation of a shared vision of justice, equality, and dignity.

The Supply Chain and Its Global Impact

A Supply Chain is a sequence of processes involved in producing and distributing a product and often stretches across the globe. Products, raw materials, and components travel thousands of miles to reach consumers. These highly developed supplier networks exemplify human innovation but also represent an ethical challenge.

The global nature of the supply chain often means that products cross through regions with varying levels of respect for human rights. This poses an imminent risk to human rights, whether through exploitative labor practices, human trafficking, environmental degradation, or other infringements. Recognizing and addressing these challenges is crucial for businesses committed to sustainable practices.

The Role of SDGs and Sustainable Supply Chain Management

The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) serve as a framework for a more sustainable future. Among the 17 goals, several are closely tied to respecting human rights within the supply chain. At JAS Worldwide, we focus on SDGs 8 and 12 in this regard. Goal 8 emphasizes Decent Work and Economic Growth, which means ensuring ethical and fair employment practices throughout the supply chain. Goal 12 highlights Responsible Consumption and production, encompassing adherence to human rights and ethical standards in manufacturing and sourcing.

Sustainability in business is based on three key dimensions: Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG). The social aspect, which includes human rights, is as essential as the other two. At JAS Worldwide, our commitment to safeguarding human rights is not only a legal obligation but a core part of our Code of Business Conduct, Supplier Code of Conduct, Policies, and Business Practices. JAS recognizes that a sustainable supply chain upholds workers' rights, maintains safe working conditions, and minimizes any negative impact on local communities and the environment.

The Path Forward

This commitment revolves around the principle that the movement of goods in transportation and logistics should not compromise individual dignity and well-being. In our increasingly interconnected world, the impact of our actions extends far beyond the surface. By protecting human rights, we progress toward a sustainable future. This involves crafting our supply chain, along with our partnerships with customers and suppliers, as a moral compass to uphold human rights, combat global issues like human trafficking, and prevent other infringements on a global scale.

JAS Indonesia transports 11 containers of unpolished travertine blocks
JAS Indonesia leverages impressive network for safe transport of marble, stone, and ceramic tiles

It pays to have strong relationships with manufacturers and importers in the marble, stone, and ceramic tile industry. Since 2017, JAS Indonesia has built a reputation as a premier logistics provider for this vertical market.

The years of experience and professionalism exhibited by the JAS Indonesia team is unparalleled. Customers requiring the transport of ceramic tiles, marbles, stones, and machinery for processing marble, sanitary ware, bathroom furniture, and accessories know they can receive quality service from the JAS team.

Years of networking and relationship-building within the industry have led to solid connections with suppliers in Italy, Izmir, and Xiamen. As an additional benefit, JAS Indonesia managing director Franceschino Menconi has lived in Carrara, Italy giving him a personal connection to many suppliers. He goes the extra mile to arrange meetings between buyers and suppliers to discuss how JAS Indonesia’s expertise in the industry can benefit them in the future. With offices in Carrara, it is easier for JAS Indonesia to build buyer and supplier trust.

Recently, the JAS Indonesia team moved 11 containers of unpolished travertine blocks and 4 containers of unpolished marble slabs for a customer. As part of its services, the JAS team:

  • Picks up blocks directly from quarries using heavy equipment with a capacity of up to 30 tons or via drop-deck trucks with a capacity of up to 60 tons.
  • Handles blocks in the depots using specialized equipment that loads them into shipping containers.
  • Sends shipping containers to appropriate ports for transport.

Customers can rely on JAS Indonesia to provide end-to-end logistics services for their ceramic tiles, marbles, and stones that protect the products at all stages.

JAS Hong Kong provides assembly and process with gaming accessories partner
JAS Hong Kong Supports Product Assembly for Gaming Manufacturer

As the consumer market recovers in 2021, logistics services and supply chain management requirements have become increasingly challenging and cover more than just transportation and warehousing. JAS Hong Kong has always thought one step ahead for its customers. Therefore, in Q2 2021, the JAS Hong Kong logistics team successfully launched a product assembly program for a world-leading gaming accessories provider.

The partnership between JAS Hong Kong and the customer began in 2012. Over the last nine years the project has increased more than threefold. The customer's success is due not only to the exponential growth of the gaming market but also its continuous launch of new products and promotional combo/bundle sets. Each bundle consists of 3 or 4 products, which include items such as a gaming keyboard, mouse, and headset. The latest launch was in the summer of 2021 and entered the US market through megastores or e-Commerce platforms. JAS Hong Kong exclusively handled the entire assembly process including material sourcing and procurement, system support, assembly-line operation, and space and human resources management.

The bundle set program was carried out over the course of 3 months in 2021. During this period, over 40 additional workers per day were deployed for a total of 36 working days. Over 50,000 sets were constructed and shipped to the United States in 23 containers (40'HQ) under the supervision of the JAS team.

Of the project Jason Tse, Logistics Manager for JAS Hong Kong, said “The hassle-free solution designed by the JAS team enabled the customer to focus its resources on product design, sales, and marketing knowing JAS would make the rest of the process worry free.”

JAS continually provides service that meets and exceeds every industry standard as well as our customers’ expectations. JAS is confident that there are more successful partnerships ahead.

JAS Xiamen Rises to the Challenge of Oversized Ocean Freight

JAS Worldwide offers innovative solutions to meet the needs of its logistics and transportation clients. Safe and secure shipping for ocean freight that exceeds standard-size shipping containers and cargo bins is one of our specialties.

JAS Xiamen is pleased to announce its successful first arrangement of a break-bulk vessel. This ocean shipping method was necessary to accommodate a professional offshore technical services enterprise in China. The solution is one of the many ways JAS Worldwide rises to the challenge of today’s complicated logistics environment.

The safe and secure passage was provided courtesy of a charted vessel outfitted to carry the 290,000-plus kilograms of 300mt Pedestal Mounted Cranes (PMC). The cargo departed from the Port of Zhangzhou, Fujian, with a destination of Qidong, Jiangsu.

“It is a mark of great success for our team,” said Steven Su, JAS Xiamen branch manager. “They will use the experience gained from this project to develop further logistics businesses in related vertical markets.”

Preparing for Hurricanes, Typhoons, and Monsoons

Under the best of circumstances, supply chain management can be a complex process. It can be even more complicated during the tropical storm season when the risk of monsoons, typhoons, and hurricanes peaks. These tropical storms create high winds and flooding, disrupting and delaying freight transportation, which can potentially cause supply chain failures and revenue loss. While severe weather is not something that can be controlled, there are several ways that you can ensure a resilient supply chain and minimize potential disruptions.

  1. Know How to Prioritize Your Freight: The severe weather associated with tropical storms can shut down ports and airports. When they do open back up, capacity and may be limited, and there may also be extensive backlogs. By knowing what freight is most important, you can help prevent further disruptions downstream.
  2. Plan for Inventory Disruptions: During the peak of tropical storm season, it can be wise to plan for additional inventory to be on hand if your supply chain is disrupted due to significant port and airport closures and delays.
  3. Watch the Weather: Taking a proactive approach to monitoring the weather during tropical storm season is vital. It allows you to stay well-informed of impending severe weather that might impact shipment delivery. While forecasts change at a moment’s notice, it is essential that you are aware of the weather forecast and any precautionary measures taken locally, such as port and airport closures and shelter-in-place orders.
  4. Utilize Technology to Increase Supply Chain Visibility: In the event of severe weather, maintaining supply chain visibility and real-time access to information about paused and canceled shipments is vital. By maintaining supply chain visibility, you can more easily identify potential problems, allowing you to make early and informed decisions that can help keep your supply chains running smoothly.
  5. Maintain a Line of Communication: When severe weather occurs, it is important to maintain a clear line of communication with your service providers. This means ensuring that your provider knows which cargo is of the highest priority and giving as much warning as possible about a needed shipment as canceled flights and closed ports can delay shipment and reduce capacity.

With tropical storm season upon us, it is important to be prepared for whatever disruptions severe weather might bring. Whether it is developing a contingency plan long before severe weather hits or rerouting cargo and utilizing air cargo options when severe weather occurs, JAS can help keep your supply chain running smoothly. To make sure you are ready for the upcoming season, contact your local JAS office.

JAS Supports Countries Reopening Around the World

In today’s environment, shippers are faced with numerous challenges, from the immediate need to replenish drastically reduced inventory levels to budgeting logistics costs in a highly unpredictable environment. Blank sailings, carrier solvency, and steadily building port congestion is resulting in increased supply chain risk and lead time fluctuations. Global air cargo capacity has been reduced by over 25% making access to space more constrained due to overall demand and increased dwell time due to testing and customs inspections of PPE goods.

JAS is working closely with our customers to offer solutions that balance planning with responsiveness and agility, while working to provide service options that mitigate the increased costs and risks that exist with current market conditions.

Our Flight Operations solutions address the immediate and urgent needs of our customers. We have scheduled weekly flights from the following areas:

China to the USA with connections to Latin America

Europe to the USA with connections to Latin America

USA to Europe

China to Europe

Additional flights will be added as needed.

JAS SEA-AIR services provide an alternative solution to customers requiring shorter lead times than traditional ocean freight while providing a lower cost option to air freight. We currently offer hubs in Singapore and Korea that connect Asia with the rest of the world.

For traditional ocean FCL and LCL services, our ocean team aligns our carrier allocations and schedules with our customers’ forecasts. Services such as container and order management offer additional value to our standard ocean freight services.

While our current priority is to work with your immediate needs, we do not want to lose sight of the need for long-term planning strategies so please contact us at info@jas.com or reach out to your local JAS representative for more information.
