China Announces New FTZs to Boost the Economy

On the 21st of September, the State Council of the People’s Republic of China issued the Notice [GuoFa (2020) No. 10] on “Issuing the General Plan for the Beijing, Hunan and Anhui Pilot Free Trade Zones and the Regional Expansion Plan of the Zhejiang Pilot Free Trade Zone”, announcing the increase of the existing Pilot Free Trade Zones to include three new zones in Beijing, Anhui, and Hunan and to further expand the Zhejiang Pilot Free Trade Zone.

The recent expansion of the project will bring the total number of Pilot FTZs in China to 21; these FTZs are important pilot projects which assist the development of market reformation in the rest of China. Each of the pilot zones has been attributed specific tasks and has received special market considerations to reflect so.

The Beijing Pilot FTZ will be focused on science-tech innovation, international commerce, and high-tech industries, covering up to 119 km2, and will contribute, together with the existing Hebei Pilot FTZ and Tianjin Pilot FTZ, to promote the development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

The Hunan Pilot FTZ will include several areas in Changsha, Yueyang, and Chenzhou, to promote and develop the Central China region and the corridor between the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the Greater Bay area in Southern China. The Pilot FTZ aims to become an advanced manufacturing center.

The Anhui Pilot FTZ, the third new FTZ announced in 2020, would include three areas in Hefei, Wuhu, and Bengbu, focusing on the high-tech industries and promoting the further development of the Belt and Road Initiative.

The establishment of the FTZs in Hunan and Anhui is seen as a move to enable less-developed provinces to become more appealing to high-quality manufacturing, attract investment and boost efficiency, drawing investment in from their bordering provinces of Guangdong and Jiangsu.

The Notice also announces the expansion of the already existing Zhejiang Pilot Free Trade Zone by adding 119 km2 covering three areas in Ningbo, Hangzhou, and Jinyi and aiming to develop an international trading hub for commodities and agricultural products and to become a vital innovation center.

JAS covers the major provinces and cities in China, our team is always here to help our customers in identifying potential business opportunities and help them to face any challenges in supply chain with the best-fit solutions.

JAS Korea, a Specialized Solution in the Pharma Industry

As economies around the world are suffering from the impact of Covid-19, businesses are experiencing losses, workers are without jobs, and many face the challenge of a complete upheaval of lifestyle. However, pharmaceutical companies are taking center stage in the Covid-19 fight, and one of these is a Korean conglomerate, SK Group, is seeing growth on the stock market and a new burst of innovation in the infectious disease landscape as the race for treatment approval for a Covid-19 therapy takes off.

SK Group, the 2nd largest group in Korea after Samsung with an annual revenue of $213.6B in 2018, has two arms of pharmaceutical subsidiaries, SK Pharmteco, the pharmaceutical intermediate, and API manufacturer & SK Biopharmaceuticals, the new drug development.

With support from JAS APAC & JAS Worldwide, JAS Korea has become a contracted freight forwarding business partner for SK Biotek as of last December, then after months of implementation period, JAS has been handling various types of Pharmaceutical export shipments by Air & Ocean to additional International Pharmaceutical companies in Europe.

Due to the nature of the cargo, pharmaceutical products, they must be mostly carried by air freight, using special equipment such as dry ice gel/ ice pack, cool/ reefer truck, temperature-controlled storage, and even RKNs which require thorough knowledge and experience to handle such a commodity properly and in a timely manner.

The RKN e1 is a one pallet size container, based on a second-generation active temperature control system and utilizes compressor cooling and electric heating technology, to meet the requirements of the pharmaceutical industry for smaller air shipments.

The RKN e1 container maintains product temperatures in the +2 to +8 °C range, controlled room temperature (+15 to +25 °C) range,  JAS Korea has successfully arranged 11 RKN e1 for its door to door delivery to a Spanish Pharmaceutical consignee with Dap term in March, when the Pandemic was in the peak.

SK Pharmteco’s subsidiary, AMPAC is one of the strategic partners to a U.S. public benefit drug manufacturing corporation, which recently received federal government funding of $354 million for advanced manufacturing of America’s most essential medicines at risk of shortage, including those for the COVID-19 response. With its strategic partners, it has initiated manufacturing chemical precursor ingredients, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), and finished dosage forms for over a dozen essential medicines to treat hospitalized patients with COVID-19-related illnesses.

SK Biotek will supply pharmaceutical intermediates to AMPAC and has appointed JAS Korea as the logistics provider for this project. The 1st air shipment was exported to AMPAC in California, USA by suing 5 x RKN e 1 in close cooperation with JAS San Francisco on June 15th, all 5 x RKNs were successfully delivered to AMPAC on the next day. After the ingredient’s analysis main orders will be placed shortly and JAS will continue to handle this business. Next opportunity will be export business out of AMPAC to overseas with the finished products.

JAS Korea is continuing to expand their reputation as the perfect solution for the transportation of pharmaceutical products in the market with these continued efforts excellent team-work. We are sure JAS will be leading the market in a near future.

JAS Ensures Safety of Live Chicks

In May of 2020 longtime JAS partner Aviagen®  and sister company Hubbard® required a large shipment of live, day-old chicks be transported to Bangladesh from the United States and France. These chicks needed to arrive the next day to their destination, safely and in good health. With the successful delivery of the chicks to Aviagen's customer in Bangladesh the broiler breeding stock will produce 110,393,893 kilograms (243,376,874 pounds) of chicken meat for the people living in Bangladesh.

This important shipment had to go out amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions it has brought to the shipping industry, as well as required expertise to navigate the mine field of other special requirements in order to successfully deliver this live cargo next day, safely, and efficiently.

JAS Live Animals regularly organizes airfreight shipments to various destinations, and this shipment was important to Aviagen and marked a historic shipment for the company. Quoted from Aviagen "Several characteristics contribute to the historic nature of this shipment. First, it represents the most grandparent and parent stock chicks ever to be exported internationally in a single shipment. And it is the first-time multiple brands of multi-generational chicks destined for different poultry companies have shared an international flight."  JAS is honored to be part of such a historical event in the Live Animal Industry and to continue to work with Aviagen on future shipments.

This shipment required specialized pallets to be built, as well as overnight feeding to be done for the chicks on their long journey. The pallets, built in the USA, had to merge with the pallets built in France, by a competitor. Thanks to the dedication of the night shift, through their feedings and follow-ups the chicks were under constant care, and thanks to the partnership and clear communication between the customers, forwarders, and airlines this critical shipment was successful.

“This is really where the JAS motto People Make the Difference comes to life. Passion! Passion! Passion! We are dealing with live animals and not general cargo, you must have passion, dedication, and commitment to the cause. And those are the qualities that proudly makes JAS different from the competition, to the point where it seems like you are making the most incredible accomplishments for your customers, but for you it simply has become your normal daily routine.” JAS Live Animals Division Manager, Carlo Rebuffi

JAS is proud to have a strong relationship with Aviagen, handling shipments like this for them for nearly 2 decades. Starting in the United States, JAS worked hard to gain their trust and earn credibility with them, expanding into Europe and gaining the needed expertise to ship such a commodity as live animals to the point that JAS developed its own Live Animals division. This division continues to grow and has a dedicated team of experts willing to go over and beyond to deserve the business of our partners.

JAS Supports Countries Reopening Around the World

In today’s environment, shippers are faced with numerous challenges, from the immediate need to replenish drastically reduced inventory levels to budgeting logistics costs in a highly unpredictable environment. Blank sailings, carrier solvency, and steadily building port congestion is resulting in increased supply chain risk and lead time fluctuations. Global air cargo capacity has been reduced by over 25% making access to space more constrained due to overall demand and increased dwell time due to testing and customs inspections of PPE goods.

JAS is working closely with our customers to offer solutions that balance planning with responsiveness and agility, while working to provide service options that mitigate the increased costs and risks that exist with current market conditions.

Our Flight Operations solutions address the immediate and urgent needs of our customers. We have scheduled weekly flights from the following areas:

China to the USA with connections to Latin America

Europe to the USA with connections to Latin America

USA to Europe

China to Europe

Additional flights will be added as needed.

JAS SEA-AIR services provide an alternative solution to customers requiring shorter lead times than traditional ocean freight while providing a lower cost option to air freight. We currently offer hubs in Singapore and Korea that connect Asia with the rest of the world.

For traditional ocean FCL and LCL services, our ocean team aligns our carrier allocations and schedules with our customers’ forecasts. Services such as container and order management offer additional value to our standard ocean freight services.

While our current priority is to work with your immediate needs, we do not want to lose sight of the need for long-term planning strategies so please contact us at info@jas.com or reach out to your local JAS representative for more information.

JAS India Moves Airbus H-125 Helicopter

After a month of precision planning and coordination, JAS India and JAS Spain synchronized their efforts and moved an Airbus H-125 helicopter from the Barcelona airport to the Delhi airport.

The Helicopter is the Eurocopter AS350 Écureuil, now known as Airbus Helicopters H-125, is a single-engine light utility helicopter which was originally designed and manufactured in France.

The customer in India was very happy with the service and were delighted with the on time delivery of the helicopter on schedule and with no issues. This was a result of the detailed planning and coordination of the JAS India team with the JAS Spain team as well as with the local service providers like the client's customs broker, transporter, and customs authorities. All the necessary documentation was processed in accordance to the local laws and well in advance of deadlines so that there was no room for any delay at any point.

Because of this detailed and precise planning, JAS India delivered the helicopter to their customer on time as indicated at the time of delivery at the time of quotation which was almost 20 days prior to the execution date.
