UPDATED Customer Advisory: Red Sea Attacks and Suez Canal Bypass

Current Situation

The Red Sea crisis enters its thirteenth week with escalating concerns about extended delays and widespread disruptions impacting the global container shipping network. Terminations of voyages and congestion surges at regional port terminals are happening with short notice, further complicating logistics. The underlying geopolitical tensions continue to cloud the situation, hindering a swift resolution.

Industry Insights, Facts & Market Developments

Below are some additional key facts and market developments surrounding the situation, including a timeline of major events.

  • Drewry's WCI composite index shows a further but slowed decline of 4% this week. Drewry expects spot rates ex-China to continue declining in the coming weeks, whereas freight rates on transatlantic will remain stable.
  • US CENTCOM continues to report successful engagement and destruction of a variety of drones, missiles, and drone boats, drones on land before they are being utilized. While successful engagement is cited, the past week has seen one of the largest and heaviest number of attacks from the Houthi militia.
  • UKMTO (United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations) reported today that a vessel has been struck by a missile causing damage, the vessel continued its voyage and the crew reported being safe.
  • This past week has seen the highest number of attacks on commercial merchant vessels, container and breakbulk/conventional ships alike.
  • The European Union (EU) expresses growing concern about the impact of the Red Sea Crisis on global supply chains and calls for a diplomatic solution.
  • The Yemeni government accuses the Houthi militia of obstructing potential solutions to ensure safe passages in the Red Sea.
  • Industry reports highlight a rise in insurance premiums for vessels traveling the Cape of Good Hope route due to the increased voyage time.
  • The Houthi militia has today stated their intent to increase the geographical scope of attacks and in addition, potentially use hypersonic missiles, which they claim to have access to. If true, this would lead to further escalation of the current situation.

Our Commitment

JAS Worldwide will continue to monitor the situation and keep you duly updated. Our public website update will occur once per week, every Friday.

JAS Hong Kong, with support from partners, repurposed donated factory fabric samples to clothe adults and children in need, reducing fashion waste.
Dressing with Purpose: JAS Hong Kong's Clothing Drive for Sustainable Change

A dedicated team of JAS Hong Kong employees, led by Sustainability Ambassador Gary Ferreira, came together to make an impact in the lives of those less fortunate. Their mission? To repurpose factory fabric samples generously donated by a department store and instead give them to adults and children in need – the impact was twofold – it clothed adults and children in need and reduced waste sent to a landfill.

The JAS employees started by detaching company labels from each item. They then sorted and packaged the fabrics to ensure the garments could be easily distributed to charitable organizations in Hong Kong and the Philippines. The act of kindness was met with smiling and thankful faces.

This collaboration not only helped address material needs but also contributed to reducing fashion waste. This initiative underscores how corporate entities can address social and environmental challenges by leveraging existing resources and expertise.

We are grateful for our retail partner, Inland Corporation, and the Bruni Foundation for their support in ensuring each item reached its intended recipients with care and efficiency. Such achievements are only possible through collective cross-industry efforts.

This initiative is part of the Bruni Foundation's 'Pay it Forward' program, which empowers JAS employees to become ambassadors of change by actively supporting social and environmental causes. Throughout the year, the Bruni Foundation, an integral part of JAS, will support various global projects, primarily focusing on these United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Quality Education, No Poverty, Clean Water and Sanitation, and Zero Hunger. Yet, understanding the current challenges towards the environment and the well-being of societies, the Bruni Foundation also actively supports initiatives that promote responsible environmental stewardship.

UPDATED Customer Advisory: Red Sea Attacks and Suez Canal Bypass

Current Situation

This week, the Red Sea crisis and geopolitical situation in the region worsened. Week 12 saw the first sunken vessel, MV 'Rubymar', leaking fuel and fertilizer, along with the tragic deaths of 3 seafarers that served on the MV 'True Confidence' when the attack occurred in the Gulf of Aden. Industry associations are urging vessel diversions until safe passage is guaranteed.

Industry Insights, Facts & Market Developments

Below are some additional key facts and market developments surrounding the situation, including a timeline of major events.

  • Drewry's WCI composite index has dropped another 6% this week, bringing the total decline to 9.23% over the past month. This decline is further emphasized by specific routes, with the Asia to North Europe index now witnessing an even further drop at 27% against its peak seven weeks ago, and the Asia to Mediterranean index experiencing another few points bringing the decrease from last week's 24% to 30% this week.
  • US CENTCOM continues to report successful engagement and destruction of a variety of drones, missiles, and drone boats, drones on land before they are utilized. Yet, nothing has led to a decrease in attacks.
  • UKMTO (United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations) reported an incident 50 miles southeast of Yemen today, fortunately, the vessel involved
was not struck and continued its journey safely.
  • The MV' MSC Sky II' was attacked by two missiles on March 4th and continued its passage to Djibouti.
  • The MV 'True Confidence', a bulk carrier, remains at drift in the neighboring Gulf of Aden with no crew on board since the hit by an anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) on March 6th.

Setting Sail Towards Sustainability: The Impact of California's Vessel Speed Reduction Program on Blue Whales and Beyond

February 18, 2024

Blue Whale with Cargo Ship in the Background

Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies is a voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) Program along the coast of California which incentivizes companies to incorporate sustainable shipping practices across their global supply chain. By creating seasonal and predictable slow speed zones, this program helps companies protect endangered whales, reduce fuel use and regional greenhouse gas emissions, and improve air quality and human health outcomes.

The program runs each year from mid-May to December to coincide with peak ozone and whale feeding and migration. The program covers two geographic regions, one along the Southern California coast and one outside the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since 2014, the program has achieved an estimated 44% decrease in the risk of whale strikes.

As an ambassador, JAS engages with its shipping partners operating in the area, recognizes the shared vision and commitment with those already involved in vessel speed reduction, and further encourages other ocean carriers to participate in the program.

“What makes the BWBS initiative stand out is that it not only addresses carbon emissions, but also safeguards biodiversity. By voluntarily reducing vessel speed (VSR) along the California coast, ocean carriers commit to protecting blue whales and raising industry awareness. JAS supports this initiative and will further engage its logistics partners on the key role whales play in the environment and our responsibility to improve the ocean ecosystem.” -Andrea Goeman, SVP QHSE & Sustainability, JAS Worldwide
“Being an ambassador for the BWBS Program is a great initiative towards more sustainable ocean freight solutions. It is a way to further engage with our carriers, with whom we share values towards a sustainable transformation, and an example of how collaboration can be beneficial for the logistics ecosystem, our customers, and the environment.” -Lars Huebecker, EVP Global Head of Ocean Freight

our top story

From aspiring doctor to JAS India Managing Director, Sonal's journey is a testament to the power of passion, resilience, and dedication.

From Summer Job to Managing Director: Sonal Singhal's Journey in Logistics

Sonal Singhal never planned to work in freight forwarding. She had always aspired to be a doctor. Fate, however, had other plans for her when she stumbled upon a summer job in a freight forwarding company. Little did she know that this serendipitous opportunity would lay the foundation for her inspiring career in logistics.

Fast forward more than 20 years, and now a seasoned veteran in the industry, Sonal joined JAS in 2020, where her initial days were met with many challenges. With no time for doubt or hesitation, she faced them head-on. Stepping into the role of Director of Sales & Marketing for India, she embarked on a journey of building a team from scratch during a global pandemic, and leading sales – something she had never done before. "While I couldn't travel and meet teams and customers in person, I was able to use that extra time to double down on the behind-the-scenes work," she recounts.

Sonal's abilities and talents did not go unnoticed. In less than a year, she was named as Managing Director of India – making her one of just two female Managing Directors at JAS. Under her leadership, JAS India has experienced a change of culture coupled with remarkable growth and has become a pivotal player in the logistics space.

She is humble in all her accomplishments but recognizes there is still work to be done.

"I take pride in my role, but I also feel like I have a responsibility to mentor more women in this space, for leadership roles," she affirms, emphasizing the importance of mentorship, representation, and empowerment. As a woman navigating a predominantly male-dominated industry, Sonal acknowledges the challenges she's faced. "There are certain gender biases that still exist, it takes time to break those stigmas," she observes. Despite these obstacles, Sonal remains resilient, offering words of encouragement to aspiring women in the field. "Don't give up, and just keep doing your best," she advises, embodying perseverance and determination.

She is passionate about the powerful role of encouragement and mentorship, as she knows first-hand how it feels when someone believes in you more than you believe in yourself. She recalls what made her stay on at her first freight forwarding company, "I actually didn't want to stay, but the head of the organization loved my work and encouraged me that I could succeed. I think the faith and belief he showed in me then was something that influenced me to stay. And history repeated itself at JAS, where leadership has entrusted the same confidence in me and gave me an opportunity which I couldn't have dreamed for myself, at least not so soon. This is a great sign at JAS with male allies promoting inclusivity and driving the change."

Sonal remembers how that empowerment made her feel and now ingrains the same sentiment into her leadership philosophy. "Failures are yours, and success belongs to the team," she asserts, embodying a collaborative approach to leadership. She champions democratic decision-making and fosters a culture of open communication and feedback, recognizing the value of diverse perspectives.

In addition to her professional endeavors, Sonal is a devoted mother of two teenage boys and is a loving daughter. Balancing her career with family responsibilities, she finds fulfillment in nurturing her children and maintaining strong ties with her parents – all with the support of her spouse, without which it would have been impossible. "I'm trying my best to raise them as men a society would like to see," Sonal lovingly shares.

Sonal's journey is a testament to the power of passion, resilience, and dedication. As she continues to pave the way for women in logistics, her impact extends far beyond the boardroom, inspiring future generations of female leaders.
