From aspiring doctor to JAS India Managing Director, Sonal's journey is a testament to the power of passion, resilience, and dedication.
From Summer Job to Managing Director: Sonal Singhal's Journey in Logistics

Sonal Singhal never planned to work in freight forwarding. She had always aspired to be a doctor. Fate, however, had other plans for her when she stumbled upon a summer job in a freight forwarding company. Little did she know that this serendipitous opportunity would lay the foundation for her inspiring career in logistics.

Fast forward more than 20 years, and now a seasoned veteran in the industry, Sonal joined JAS in 2020, where her initial days were met with many challenges. With no time for doubt or hesitation, she faced them head-on. Stepping into the role of Director of Sales & Marketing for India, she embarked on a journey of building a team from scratch during a global pandemic, and leading sales – something she had never done before. "While I couldn't travel and meet teams and customers in person, I was able to use that extra time to double down on the behind-the-scenes work," she recounts.

Sonal's abilities and talents did not go unnoticed. In less than a year, she was named as Managing Director of India – making her one of just two female Managing Directors at JAS. Under her leadership, JAS India has experienced a change of culture coupled with remarkable growth and has become a pivotal player in the logistics space.

She is humble in all her accomplishments but recognizes there is still work to be done.

"I take pride in my role, but I also feel like I have a responsibility to mentor more women in this space, for leadership roles," she affirms, emphasizing the importance of mentorship, representation, and empowerment. As a woman navigating a predominantly male-dominated industry, Sonal acknowledges the challenges she's faced. "There are certain gender biases that still exist, it takes time to break those stigmas," she observes. Despite these obstacles, Sonal remains resilient, offering words of encouragement to aspiring women in the field. "Don't give up, and just keep doing your best," she advises, embodying perseverance and determination.

She is passionate about the powerful role of encouragement and mentorship, as she knows first-hand how it feels when someone believes in you more than you believe in yourself. She recalls what made her stay on at her first freight forwarding company, "I actually didn't want to stay, but the head of the organization loved my work and encouraged me that I could succeed. I think the faith and belief he showed in me then was something that influenced me to stay. And history repeated itself at JAS, where leadership has entrusted the same confidence in me and gave me an opportunity which I couldn't have dreamed for myself, at least not so soon. This is a great sign at JAS with male allies promoting inclusivity and driving the change."

Sonal remembers how that empowerment made her feel and now ingrains the same sentiment into her leadership philosophy. "Failures are yours, and success belongs to the team," she asserts, embodying a collaborative approach to leadership. She champions democratic decision-making and fosters a culture of open communication and feedback, recognizing the value of diverse perspectives.

In addition to her professional endeavors, Sonal is a devoted mother of two teenage boys and is a loving daughter. Balancing her career with family responsibilities, she finds fulfillment in nurturing her children and maintaining strong ties with her parents – all with the support of her spouse, without which it would have been impossible. "I'm trying my best to raise them as men a society would like to see," Sonal lovingly shares.

Sonal's journey is a testament to the power of passion, resilience, and dedication. As she continues to pave the way for women in logistics, her impact extends far beyond the boardroom, inspiring future generations of female leaders.

UPDATED Customer Advisory: Red Sea Attacks and Suez Canal Bypass

Current Situation

The ongoing Red Sea container shipping crisis, now in its fifteenth week, has not changed much since the last update, and a clear normalcy timeline remains uncertain; as we have witnessed, attacks have continued throughout this past week. Shippers and industry stakeholders should brace for continued disruptions and higher costs and adapt strategies accordingly. The coming weeks will be crucial for interpreting the outcome of the IMO meeting and its potential impact on the situation.

Industry Insights, Facts & Market Developments

Below are some additional key facts and market developments surrounding the situation, including a timeline of major events.

  • Drewry's WCI Spot Index shows a continuing decline in rates week over week. However, Asia to Europe rates have not decreased as fast as in previous weeks.
  • US CENTCOM continues to report successful engagement and destruction of a variety of drones, missiles, and drone boats, as well as drones on land before they are ever utilized. In the last few days, four more drones have been shot down.
  • Houthis claimed attacks on multiple vessels during the last week; however, vessel operators have refuted these claims from the Houthis and said no container vessels have been attacked directly.
  • Sea-Intelligence is showing a small improvement in schedule reliability and delays, however performance is still poor. The new normal of transiting around the Cape of Good Hope is becoming more stable, and further improvements are expected in the coming months.
  • As per the IMO’s Maritime security update on the Red Sea crisis and international response efforts dated March 29th, the IMO continues down the path of diplomacy to help stabilize the situation. The IMO reports they are actively involved in a long-term capacity building project in the Red Sea and that the EU is funding a 4-year project aimed at enhancing port security and fostering regional dialogue to address the underlying security concerns.

Our Commitment

JAS Worldwide will continue to monitor the situation and keep you duly updated. Our public website update will occur once per week, every Friday.

Partnering for Sustainable Logistics: Insights from TPM24

March 25, 2024

JAS Worldwide attends TPM24.

JAS Worldwide recently participated in TPM24, an event held in Long Beach, CA, where industry leaders converged to discuss the future of logistics and maritime shipping. Among the event's highlights was the joint presentation between JAS and Wesco, focusing on their collaborative efforts towards decarbonization in the industry.

TPM, or Trans-Pacific Maritime Conference, serves as a platform for key stakeholders in the shipping industry to exchange insights, discuss challenges, and explore opportunities. At TPM24 Shipper's Day, JAS Worldwide and Wesco shared their experiences in a joint panel discussion titled "First Steps: A Case Study in Developing a Decarbonization Plan".

During this session, Jim Bonsteel, VP Transportation, Customs and Trade Coordination at Wesco, and Andrea Goeman, Senior Vice President of QHSE & Sustainability at JAS Worldwide, delved into the journey towards decarbonization. Moderated by Alexander Nowroth, the discussion offered a comprehensive view of the decarbonization process within logistics Scope 3 emissions. The presentation showcased the collaboration journey from 2018 to today, starting from measuring carbon emissions to reducing them.

A key theme reiterated throughout the session was the fundamental role of partnerships in driving sustainable change. Andrea Goeman emphasized, "I firmly believe that choosing the right partners is key to making a change," underscoring the importance of collaboration and shared values in addressing industry-wide challenges.

Jim Bonsteel mentioned, "Driving progress in sustainability is about being an advocate – you have to embrace the topic in your overall logistics decision-making to go from crawling to standing up and walking."

"The presentation received positive feedback from other shippers and stakeholders who are starting on the sustainability journey," highlighted Lars Huebecker, EVP Global Head of Ocean Freight at JAS. "Our focus on sustainability within our ocean freight operations not only influences industry practices but also underscores our commitment to environmental responsibility," added Lars.

While recent years have presented significant challenges for many industries, such as the recent disruptive impact of geopolitics, the unprecedented supply chain disruptions during COVID-19, and labor actions at major seaports, the pursuit of sustainability is viewed as an enduring journey rather than a short-lived endeavor. This perception highlights the ongoing commitment required to create a meaningful change in the logistics ecosystem.

JAS Worldwide extends its appreciation to all participants and organizers of TPM 2024 for fostering meaningful discussions, providing valuable industry insights, and inspiring innovative initiatives. Moving forward, JAS Worldwide remains committed to fostering collaborative partnerships and advancing sustainable practices, driving positive change in the global maritime shipping and logistics landscape.
