Planning ahead for the upcoming holidays in Brazil and China is key to maintaining operational efficiency.
Planning ahead for the upcoming holidays in Brazil and China is key to maintaining operational efficiency.

As we enter 2024, businesses must be aware of two upcoming holidays that may impact operations. Two major events, Chinese New Year and Carnival, are set to coincide, affecting supply chains across the globe.

Chinese New Year, a traditional Chinese holiday marking the start of a new year in the Chinese Lunar Calendar, begins on February 10 and is observed across many Asian countries. During this week factories and businesses will close as the public holiday brings a week off for employees to travel to celebrate the start of a new year with their families. However, factory slowdowns are expected to being in early to mid-January with normal operations resuming at the end of February.

Simultaneously, the Carnival festival will be in full swing, particularly in Brazil, where festivities will take place from February 9 to 17. Like with Chinese New year, the consequences of the celebrations can be felt throughout supply chains both in Brazil and abroad as many manufacturers and suppliers will reduce hours or cease activities as employees take time off to celebrate.

With two large economies, observing major holidays concurrently, it is key that businesses plan and prepare accordingly as the overlap of these festivities is expected to impact global supply chains.

To effectively mitigate the impact of these celebrations on your supply chain, we recommend the following proactive measures:

  • Plan Early: Anticipate increased demand for logistics services and plan shipments well in advance to mitigate potential delays. To avoid unnecessary disruptions and price increases, it is recommended to place bookings well in advance—ideally four to six weeks before the holidays.
  • Diversify Routes and Shipping Methods: Explore alternative shipping routes to avoid congestion and potential disruptions in traditional routes. In addition, consider using multiple forms of transportation in case one method experiences disruption during this time.
  • Adjust Schedules: Be flexible with production and delivery schedules to accommodate the temporary slowdown in operations during the holidays.
  • Stay Informed: Regularly monitor updates and advisories from relevant authorities and industry sources to stay informed about any changes or developments that may impact operations.

The simultaneous occurrence of Chinese New Year and Carnival this year underscores the importance of proactive measures and a well-coordinated approach. By integrating these insights into your planning strategy, businesses can ensure a smoother transition through this period and maintain operational efficiency.
