Cold Chain Excellence Delivering LENZ’s First Commercial Therapy
LENZ Therapeutics, a biotech/pharmaceutical company focused exclusively on ophthalmology, achieved a milestone moment: the U.S. FDA approval of VIZZ™, its first commercial therapy for the treatment of presbyopia. Only weeks after approval, the very first pallets were scheduled for delivery.
To bring this launch to life, LENZ selected JAS as its logistics partner, trusting JAS to deliver speed, compliance, and reliability for a shipment critical to product launch.
Launching a first-ever product comes with high stakes. LENZ required:
- Strict +2–8°C cold chain handling (typically shipped in active containers).
- A cost-efficient solution that minimized environmental impact.
- Seamless coordination between Europe and the US, with GDP compliance and rapid handovers to avoid temperature excursions.
JAS partnered closely with LENZ to prepare facilities and develop a solution tailored to their specific needs. Through detailed audits of the JAS ORD and FRA sites, and close collaboration between JAS Europe, JAS USA, and the global Pharma & Healthcare Vertical, the teams ensured every detail was ready for success.
Key elements included:
- A unique passive packaging solution designed by JAS, reducing cost while cutting packaging waste
- A BWA pharma-capable flight using JAS’s own 747-400F, ensuring secure and reliable air transport
- GDP-compliant facilities in ORD and FRA with direct tarmac access for quick recovery and minimized risk
- Dedicated quality control processes and end-to-end oversight from experienced JAS Pharma & Healthcare teams
- Close collaboration between LENZ and JAS on customs brokerage and FDA requirements leading up to the product launch. JAS was able to clear customs and obtain FDA release on the same day as flight arrival.
- Successful delivery of LENZ’s first-ever commercial pallets of VIZZ™, on time and in compliance.
- A logistics model balancing cost efficiency, sustainability, and uncompromised quality.
- Proof of how collaboration, innovation, and expertise can make a difference when it matters most.
