JAS EMEA organized its Annual Management Meeting in Paris, France in early March. The group included all EMEA Regional Management, each Country Management and Country Sales Management, in addition an invitation of our Worldwide CEO, Marco Rebuffi, and our Sales & Marketing EVP, Stefano Redditi, as well as our Strategic Development EVP, John O’Connor, and the new Air Freight VP of JAS APAC, Jens Grimpe.
The event was very successful and celebrated the achievements and results JAS EMEA reached in 2017. This meeting also helps our team to align and establish the strong development strategies for the Region in 2018.

France is changing fast. With the newly elected young French president, Emmanuel Macron, who is reforming economic sectors, the French Industry is back on a positive momentum, full of dynamic entrepreneurs. One of France’s economical specialties is that it is the the home of global groups like LVMH, L’Oreal, Saint Gobain, Airbus, Renault, Danone, Schneider, all with huge export volumes. As well as on the import side, with huge retailers like Carrefour, Auchan, and Decathlon, among many others!
In terms of the freight forwarding market, France is also very dynamic and still holds as the 7th largest economy in the World. Transport volumes are increasing with great import and export, air, sea, and rail volumes. The main port for containers is Le Havre to the North of the country, but France is also reachable via the port of Antwerp in Belgium. In the South, the port of FOS/Marseille is renowned as an entry door into Europe from the Mediterranean Sea. For airfreight transport, the national platform and most important airport is located north of Paris, the Roissy-CDG airport. Another fast-growing airport is Lyon, heart of a strong industrial economy, with major international airlines, like Emirates, operating directly.

With the enthusiastic vision to develop our expertise and capabilities in the perishable business (pharma & food sector), the JAS France Managing director, Mr Laurent Gohet, recently invested in a superb cold room to attend our client’s needs.
JAS France also offers a very important customs advantage. JAS France, due to its location right outside of the airport, depends on the Marne La Vallée French Customs Department, which JAS France has worked with for more than 10 years, and built trust, understanding of our processes, and therefore are given a diligent clearing process to the full advantage of our esteemed customers.
With the desire to continue our development and strength, JAS France has the pleasure to introduce its new National Sales Director, Laurent Richard, whom joined the company in June 2017. Laurent is delighted to be part of the French team and very optimistic for the company’s growth. His market experience and sales drive will be great assets to the dynamic French market.
JAS France also recently hired a team of experienced professionals to strengthen its Sales and Operations Departments, new experts to give one of the best customer experiences in the industry. This is especially true with the complete logistics visibility that JAS offers to its clients thanks to our best-in-class operational platform, fully integrated globally, which brings “live” and highly accurate transport milestones, in addition to automated key performance indicators.
Finally, to be even more efficient in attending to our clients' needs, JAS France also structured a new French Tender & Pricing Management Team, in order to promptly answer our Customers and the JAS Network. This Team will be led by Mrs Charline Pepin, and JAS France's main objective is to answer all of your requests with the best reactivity and accuracy possible, in order to develop our business with customers, and with our partners around the world.

The sales and management team of JAS ZA has officially accepted the monumental challenge of achieving a growth target nearly 4 times that which was achieved in the fiscal year 2017. Some may say that this kind of growth is not possible, but the team in South Africa would beg to differ!
THE CURRENT ENVIRONMENT IN SOUTH AFRICA
With the political situation in South Africa seeming to begin to settle down, business confidence and international investment in the country are on the rise. If the newly elected president of the main political party is able to continue his drive towards a non-corrupt local government and manages to turn around certain dysfunctional state owned enterprises, the country will move even further forward.
A stronger local currency, trading at levels last seen over three years ago to the US Dollar, will assist to drive the increase of imported products to the country's shores. The world’s third largest investment bank Goldman Sachs said that South Africa is “The emerging market story for 2018”, this being a good indicator that the country is now finding the right track, also predicting interest rate cuts in 2018. The one downside of a stronger local currency will be the pressure it puts on the export market.
SO WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN FOR JAS ZA?
JAS ZA has done an immense amount of groundwork in 2017, putting in place measures to ensure they achieve their objectives in 2018. Critical to the success of the team in achieving their goal is to find the right balance between import and export volumes, as well as to look at new industry verticals.
Taking advantage of the favourable import conditions to South Africa will also be key to their success at achieving the growth targets. The team has been talking with a number of blue chip organisations, and many of the opportunities they have been collaborating on will start coming to fruition in the first quarter of 2018.
In terms of a new and improved service offerings, JAS South Africa is looking to further expand in some areas of their business. Investigating the viability of a trade finance solution as an additional advantage for new & existing clients, to be better than what any other forwarder has implemented so far. This solution is quite unique to the South African market due to local customs clearing practices, as well as clients wanting one company to handle their entire foreign trade activity, from purchase of goods to Forex management all tied in to the logistics of moving their cargo from factory to final consumer. JAS South Africa will be a leader in offering a full scope of services to our Customers.
Another focus area is going to be the general African market. JAS South Africa would like to develop this very important and emerging market with the vision to become the “Control Tower” for all trade into and out of Africa. The opportunities in these markets are bountiful, with many African countries still experiencing double digit growth figures annually.

Dubai, the city that is on the world’s radar!
Just mention the D word and see the light in people’s eyes. This is the result of many years of planning, sweat, hard work and a vision like no other.
When oil was discovered in 1966, Sheikh Rashid utilized the oil revenues to spur infrastructure development in Dubai. Schools, hospitals, roads, a modern telecommunications network … the pace of development was frenetic. A new port and terminal building were built at the Dubai International Airport. A runway extension that could accommodate any type of aircraft was implemented. The largest man-made harbor in the world was constructed at Jebel Ali, and a free zone was created around the port.
Dubai's formula for development was becoming evident to everyone – visionary leadership, high-quality infrastructure, an expatriate-friendly environment, zero tax on personal and corporate income and low import duties. The result was that Dubai quickly became a business and tourism hub for a region that stretches from Egypt to the Indian sub-continent and from South Africa to what are now called the CIS countries.
Since the 1960s, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, then ruler of Abu Dhabi, and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum had dreamed of creating a federation of the Emirates in the region. Their dreams were realized in 1971 when Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and (in 1972) Ras Al Khaimah, joined to create the United Arab Emirates.
Under the late Sheikh Zayed, the first President of UAE, the UAE has developed into one of the richest countries in the world with a per capita GDP in excess of US$17,000 per annum.
In the 1980s and early 1990s, Dubai took a strategic decision to emerge as a major international-quality tourism destination. Investments in tourism infrastructure have paid off handsomely over the years.
Dubai is now a city that boasts unmatchable hotels, remarkable architecture and world-class entertainment and sporting events. The beautiful Burj Al Arab hotel presiding over the coastline of Jumeirah beach is the world's only hotel with a seven star rating. The Emirates Towers are one of the many structures that remind us of the commercial confidence in a city that expands at a remarkable rate. Standing 350 meters high, the office tower is the tallest building in the Middle East and Europe.
Dubai also hosts major international sporting events. The Dubai Desert Classic is a major stop on the Professional Golf Association tour. The Dubai Open, an ATP tennis tournament, and the Dubai World Cup, the world's richest horse race, draw thousands every year.
