About the Topic
Logistics is defined as a business-planning framework for the management of material, service, information & capital flows. The etymology of the word “logistics” is quickly connected to military and troop support related tasks, however logistics origins go far deeper historically. For 5,000 years logistics have had a fundamental role in worldwide development.
Being part of the global economy is high on the priority list of most companies today. Whether it is to capitalize on global sourcing or tap into surging business and developing consumer markets overseas, the focus on global logistics as a value driver in any supply chain is in the forefront.
The global logistics landscape today will be discussed and its evolution as the world continues to get “smaller” and more “connected.”
JAS will also look at how the global logistics discussion has changed from “rates” & “transit” to “data” & “analytics” as global markets have become transparent. Finally, JAS will discuss how ecommerce is requiring supply chains to be even more agile than ever and how global logistics fits.

Nate May is the APAC Trade-lane Director for one of the top privately held global freight forwarders, JAS Worldwide. May has been in the industry for 13 years with a primary focus in bridging the communication & cultural gap between the US and Asia by driving efficiencies across JAS’ Trans-Pacific network through flexibility, market awareness & analytics.

One of the renowned Italian luxury fashion brands regards JAS as a trust-able Global Supply Chain partner and decided to entrust JAS China to handle their SS2017 collection from Hong Kong and Shanghai to Modena, Italy via Air Garments-on-hangers (GOH) consolidation service.
Even though JAS has been working closely with the client in various parts of the world, it is not an easy feat to secure this type of business. With a strong display of our knowledge of the client's requirements and demands, along with the successful showcase of prior Air GOH consolidations, JAS managed to outperform the other competitors. In addition, with JAS Milan's eco-friendly initiative of recycling the GOH equipment (paper-made C05) for other shipments, this enabled our clients to enjoy a more competitive rate while not compromising the quality of the service standard.
From Q4 2016 onward, JAS Hong Kong and Shanghai have weekly Air GOH consolidation service to Modena, with an average of 2,000 pieces to 4,000 pieces per consolidation per week.
By displaying our capability in GOH consolidation service from Hong Kong and Shanghai, we aim to expand our footprint to be the global nominated partner for our loyal fashion client. We also believe the success brought by this business will further strengthen the JAS position in the luxury fashion market.
India is one of the well-known emerging markets in the global economic scenario. Since the economic liberalization policies commenced in the 1990s, India has prospered which has helped to boost the Indian economy to a great extent.
The main factors behind this booming market are the economic liberalization and the perfect competition market. There has been a significant growth of the Indian market which has resulted in a high Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The average annual growth rate ranges between 6 to 7 percent. The growth rate of GDP was around 6.7 percent during the financial year 2008-09.
To further boost the market, the government is taking some positive steps with the main aim to increase the growth rate to approximately 9 percent. Due to the favorable market, more and more industries are being set up, which leads to more customer bases. At the moment, India is the fourth largest economic system in the world in terms of the purchasing power parity.

UTC Aerospace India Bangalore (formerly Goodrich Aerospace) is a fully owned 100 percent subsidiary of United Technology Corp (UTC)., U.S conglomerate. They specialize in manufacturing aircraft sub-assemblies like fuselage, landing gears, evacuation systems, aircraft interiors and other avionics. They are 100 percent EOU (export oriented unit), which means that all items manufactured are exported directly to OEM’s like Boeing, Airbus and other tier one & two aerospace companies. The raw material & components are 90 percent imported from inter-company UTC subsidiaries mainly in the US, Germany, Spain, Czech and UK and other approved UTC suppliers based in Asia like Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Japan & Korea.
JAS India signed a local agreement to handle their imports from three major locations into Bangalore airport. The business awarded based on rigorous vendor scrutiny process to evaluate our local operation capability and ensure that they have appointed the suitable vendor is handling their business, one portion of the process is conducting a site visit at JAS Bangalore office. During the visit, they have met up with the team who will be managing their business along with an introduction of JAS infrastructure and capability such as the office infrastructure, Operating Systems, core carrier relationships and etc.
After the evaluation, UTC Aerospace India is convinced of our capability and decided to award this business to us.
The JAS Automotive team is made up of Automotive industry professionals who have worked throughout the industry ranging from Tier 1 to OEMs. With over 50 years of collective automotive experience, the team has used the past as a foundation for the JAS Automotive IV.
Recalling his past days with Ford Motor Company, Vice President Conway Jeffress has ensured that the sense of Corporate Responsibility and community service resonates through the JAS Automotive team. “In order to be a strategic partner with our customers we need to support their philanthropic efforts, both with our financial and human resources.” As such the JAS Automotive team has participated in a number community service projects over the past year.

Gift of Giving: Gift of Giving is a non-profit organization with the mission to support Avondale, Michigan youth by providing clothing and nutrition for those in need, entrepreneurial experiences to mentor future leaders & classroom enrichment programs to inspire people to go beyond.
Automotive Director, Danette Beltink led the JAS Automotive team in supporting the Gift of Giving holiday fund drive. Working with the Gift of Giving Board of Director, Jeff Lau, JAS was able to contribute $1000 to the organization. In addition to being a Board Member, Jeff Lau is also the COO of Argus Logistics, a Key customer of the JAS Automotive Vertical.
Automotive Golf Classic: Since its inception in 1980, the Automotive Golf Classic(AGC) has grown and flourished to become Michigan’s premier golf event. This highly anticipated annual event, which has raised more than $7 million to date, draws the best and the brightest among leading automotive industry executives who put aside their normally competitive natures to raise funds for the more than 14,000 youth served annually by Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan. The JAS Automotive team in-kind supported the event with on-site volunteers. JAS Automotive VP Conway Jeffress and Key Account Manager Matthew Forster were both hospitality volunteers greeting and photographing participants from over 60 automotive companies and suppliers.

JAS China has strived to develop warehousing services that offer a flexible, one-stop solution for all types of clients. The latest achievement can be found in Shanghai, where JAS has been chosen to handle the warehousing service for Completely Knock Down (CKD) parts and finished goods, one of the world’s top tier automotive suppliers.
The warehouse is strategically located at Chuansha Town, Pudong New District in Shanghai, which is close to both the Pudong Airport (17 km) and Waigaoqiao Port (24km). It provides non-bonded logistics services with a storage capacity of 4,850 sqm. The automotive client has occupied 2,600 sqm with 3,400 pallet positions set up for the client.
This is equivalent to more than 50 percent of the warehouse space.
The scope of service provided to the automotive client includes the following:
During the implementation of the warehousing service for this client, JAS had to simultaneously receive the CKD parts and replenishment from the client's previously owned in-plant warehouse and relocate the parts and finished goods to the JAS Warehouse. Even though this implementation is more complex than usual with the organized effort of the JAS China warehouse team, the relocation was smoothly accomplished in two months and now the service is extended to full operation of Pick & Pack services and JIT delivery to the production line.
Recently, the client has completed a 2016 annual stock take and external audit at the JAS warehouse, the results were positive and proved the success of the JAS China warehousing service. Warehousing is always one of the most important elements in the one-stop service solution, and we look forward to expand our warehousing service to more clients in China.
Keen to offer increasingly better working conditions and extending the capability of its market expansion, JAS Brazil has invested in a new branch office in Itajai.
The Itajai branch opened its doors in 2005, initially as an exit door for wood products, as well as to serve the important textile and machinery sectors. Today, it keeps growing and has seven employees.

Uruguay and, in particular, Carrasco airport have great potential for the future. Because it not only operates as a reception center for local exports and imports; but also the Uruguayan legislation gives it the “Free Airport” agreement [which is] a very important benefit. This is a good platform for foreign companies looking to establish a regional distribution center for Latin American markets.
The Free Airport regime has been incorporated relatively recently compared to the existing free zone and free port regimes. Therefore, many companies are expected to join this platform, mainly those in vertical markets requiring large parts of their cargo by air. (i.e.Pharma).
Uruguay is a Regional HUB. Through the different logistics platforms that Uruguayan law permits (Free Zones, Free Port and Free Airport), many multinational companies are already operating in our country as a distribution center for the region. In this sense, more than 40% of the total air cargo exports come from these special customs zones and the percentage is increasing year by year. Uruguay will be closing the year 2016 with a total of 13.5 million kilos of export moved by air.
The airport's cargo terminal has just presented [itself as] a very important investment in infrastructure. Within the airport there is a facility designed in compliance with good distribution practices (GDP) established by WHO (World Health Organization), prepared to meet the high requirements of handling and storage of the pharmaceutical industry. The main purpose is to attract new foreign companies in this sector.
Our presence at the airport, together with the successful implementation of our global cargo system (Cargowise), provide optimum conditions to offer this type of integral logistics solutions to our global corporate clients. Moving such equipment requires special handling and coordination. JAS prioritizes these shipments successfully delivering them to the port, lashing as needed and loading them to the vessel. JAS partners at destinations and then takes over and helps to conclude the door to door moves. JAS has moved six such vehicles in 2016 and projects the number to more than double in the first half of 2017.
In addition to the vehicle exports, JAS now manages the import supply chain for Ziegler ensuring that parts and materials from around the world arrive in time to meet Ziegler’s production schedules.

An Executive order in 2009 directed a broad-based federal interagency Defense Export initiative titled Export Control Reform (ECR). The plan was designed to protect America's most sensitive defense technologies, while reducing unnecessary restrictions on exports of less sensitive items. The practical outcome was significant regulatory changes effecting the Export and Repair & Return programs in the Defense Manufacturing and Technology sectors. Categories of the United States Munition List (USML) were revised, commodities shifted jurisdictional control from Department of State to the Department of Commerce and substantial new licensing policies introduced.
To support these regulatory changes, a new agency was introduced to provide an enforcement system - Export Enforcement Coordination Center (E2C2). Companies found to be in violation or non-compliance of ECR regulations faced penalties and fines amounting to millions of dollars: Raytheon $8,000,000, United Technologies Corp $55,000,000 and BAE Systems $79,000,000. Understandably International Trade in Arms (ITAR) compliance has become the primary focus of the defense sector manufacturer.
To keep on top of these changes, JAS’ Government Logistics Services (GLS) staff attended training seminars and classes provided by organizations like the Society for International Affairs (http://www.sia.org) and Department of State Directorate of Defense Trade Control (http://www.pmddtc.state.gov/). In addition to accessing government sponsored sites like Webflis to conduct commodity research, JAS subscribed to a logistic information search tool (LogiQuest) that accesses multiple government sponsored sites for fast retrieval of requisite export data.
This allows JAS’ GLS group to converse knowledgeably with their client’s Compliance departments on their products and services, ensuring their products are exporting lawfully and safely. JAS can anticipate new initiatives to be introduced with the next Executive administration so the learning process will continue. We are pleased to announce that Mr. Peter Troy joined us as Vice President of Ocean Freight, Asia Pacific on January 3, 2017.
Peter has a very long and established career in the logistics industry. He is a seasoned executive who brings with him experience in P&L, sales, operations and products. Before joining JAS, Peter was the Global Head of Ocean Freight in Toll Global Forwarding based in Hong Kong, where he handled all aspects of product management covering oceans across the group.
Peter started his career with Ariel Maritime (UK) Ltd, and was quickly moving up the ranks helping grow the company from a four people operation to a staff over 100. After nine years, he left as a Director and joined Hermann Ludwig, which are known today as Geodis Wilson Group. Peter was engaged to expand and open up the first office outside of the UK. He was eventually promoted to Board Member of the UK company and was then appointed as the Managing Director / CEO Hong Kong / China Group from 1997 to 2002. Peter has been based in Hong Kong since 1997.
In 2002, Peter joined Schenker as Head of Ocean Product – China, a position he held for six years. He was also a member of the Global Ocean Freight Steering Committee within the Product Management. An opportunity arose in 2009, whereby Peter was appointed by PIFF Shipping Ltd as the CEO of Asia Pacific Region. After a year, Peter pursued his career interest with Toll Global Forwarding.
With his high level of drive and enthusiasm, we look forward to Peter leading the Ocean Freight team to new heights of success.
Brazil is one of the largest countries in Latin America, with a dynamic and very competitive market. That is why, in a continuous search for customer loyalty and a driving strategy of differentiation, JAS Brazil promoted a series of customer events at the end of the year 2016. These events have become a kind of tradition and many customers wait for them in excitement, not only to fraternize but also debate market expectations for the following year.
These meetings took place in São Paulo, Campinas, and São José dos Campos, bringing together many important global clients.
Do you like potato chips? Potato chips are one of the favorite snacks in South Korea, which require approximately 130,000 Tons of potatoes a year for production.
One important requirement to make good potato chips is to have the potatoes as fresh as possible or else it will not be delicious. During summer time from June to October, South Korea alone can produce approximately 100,000 Tons of potatoes locally, but it is difficult to produce sufficient a quantity of potatoes during winter.
In order to meet market demands and fulfill customer satisfaction in the winter, they must first import and store potatoes from West USA in November and later on import fresh potatoes from Australia, which has summer from December onwards. Due to several reasons, Australia's export for potatoes are increasing rapidly. From January to May of 2016, USA exports were down 65 percent, compared to the same time last year, while Australia exports went up 69 percent.
Potatoes from Australia to Korea require a very special handling process & know-how. Transportation from an Australia Farm to a Korean manufacturers’ plants have to be done by reefer containers, as the potatoes require certain temperature control & ventilation throughout the journey. It is estimated about 1,000 – 1,200 of 40-feet reefer containers were moved in 2016 and same is projected for 2017.
In 2016, JAS Australia and Korea successfully stepped into this business by handling 163 of the 40-feet reefer containers for one of South Korea's major potato chip manufacturing companies. Subsequently, JAS has also secured approximately 400 of the 40-feet reefer containers in 2017 with all three manufacturers. The 2017 business contract was signed at the JAS Sydney office in December 2016 with Australian Supplier, Shingreen Fresh and JAS Australia and Korea.
With Potato Logistics, JAS is not only offering a pure transport service, but also a wide range of associated logistics services, extending from professional ocean shipment to destination storage and other activities specific to the agricultural sector.
JAS will continue to deliver quality potatoes punctually and in good condition so that everyone is able to enjoy their potato chips even in the winter time in South Korea.
JAS Singapore had the privilege to participate in the new upcoming Airport Terminal 4 Project with one of its regular customers.
Before the operation, JAS Singapore sat down with the customer to gain a better understanding of the operation along with their concerns and requirements. The customer informed JAS Singapore that they required the delivery and positioning of 30 X-Ray Machines along with its complementary accessories to the Airport Terminal 4 construction site of a secured area. After gathering all the information, JAS Singapore knew that instead of the usual solutions, they needed to provide a Total Supply Chain Solution for this operation.
In order to ensure that the delivery and positioning of the machines were handled correctly, JAS Singapore gathered internal and external experts to discuss how to manage the whole operation better. After finalizing the details, all personnel involved in the operation were required to undergo a test that was set up by the authorities so that they could secure the pass to enter into the secured area.
After several construction site visits, planning and close co-ordination with all partners, JAS Singapore was able to execute this operation smoothly and to our customer's satisfaction.

We are pleased to introduce Mr. Bruce Ning as the new General Manager of the Northern and Central China region, who came on board on November 8, 2016
With over 17 years’ of experience in the logistics field, Bruce has a strong knowledge of the industry, along with a remarkable track record working across various functions in Top Logistics companies like Panalpina, Damco, etc. Prior to joining JAS, Bruce was the Chief Commercial Officer for Central China in Damco, where he was responsible for commercial development across all segments and verticals in the Central China Area. In 2012, Bruce was awarded by the Shanghai Multiple Trade Zone Board of Management as Excellent Enterprising Businessman for the successful establishment of a Regional Distribution Center project in the Yangshan Free Trade Port Area in Shanghai.
On a personal note, Bruce was born in Hong Kong and spent 10 years studying in the UK, graduating from the University of Bath with a BSC in National Sciences. Subsequently, he continues with self-education in his spare time and passed CFA Level 3 exams in 2003. Currently, he is the speaker for EMBA and MBA classes for a number of renowned universities like University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, University of Iowa, etc.
We believe with his excellent people management skills and strong customer focus, it will bring forth a new culture to JAS Northern and Central China which will drive our business development to the next level.
