Swedish customer Skandinaviska Glassystem AB (customer of JAS Sweden) has elevated the development of high performance glass to an art form. The company is currently involved in a glass walls project for a new building in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Each wall's weight is almost 20 metric tons with dimensions of 14 x 2.60 x 3.90 meters. These glass modules are being sent daily from Sweden to the building site in Copenhagen. In conjunction with the customer, JAS and the carrier Karlans Båt Specialtransport AB send daily low loading trailers between Sweden and Denmark. The cargo rack has been specifically built by the customer to accommodate the glass modules; the same rack needed to be adapted to fit on the trailer.
JAS Sweden’s scope of work is to coordinate these transports to ensure that all cargo arrives safely and just-in-time for the erection. Empty racks are returned to the Skandinaviska Glassystem plant during the return journey, maximizing the productivity of the plant and minimizing investments in customized racks.
While transporting the cargo, the trailer is only about 20 cm from the ground and a lot of preparation was needed - often on-site along the roads where the cargo was due to transit - to plan the best available route for the trailers. The low max headroom in Denmark is just 4, this required extensive surveys of bridges and tunnels along the route in order to obtain advanced transit authorization by the authorities.
The project is expected to be completed at the end of spring 2008, when all Swedish glass walls of the Copenhagen building will be erected.
