Sailing under the JAS flag

June 26, 2008

JAS Sweden has been working hand in hand with its customer to seek cost effective solutions for windmills transportation.

During the early spring of 2008 several charter vessels have been arranged to transport two huge Dynawind windmills, each producing 3 megawatts. JAS Sweden’s involvement has been basically from the drawing table to under hook at site of the windmills erection.

Owing to the good cooperation between JAS and its carriers, it was decided to have one vessel sailing under the JAS flag on route to the discharge port.

The newly built windmills are the first two windmills in commercial use in their size in Sweden, and as such the construction in itself is quite extreme. On top of the high towers (90 meters) is located the complete motor for a total weight of approximately 170 tons. The blades are 44 meters long and, in the area of maximum width, 4 meters wide.

JAS involvement was not only to arrange charter vessels, JAS Sweden also undertook the complete planning of the job which included very special haulages of the cargo ex factory to port and from port to site (under hook) including all permits and escorting vehicles, labour in the ports and cranes to lift the cargo ex ship to special trailers. Onboard the ship, the responsibility of JAS also extended to setting all blocking and bracing of the cargo and acted as supercargo while all physical handling of the cargo occurred.

"The work we undertook was quite interesting" says Johan Bjorklund, Regional MD in Scandinavia, "and together with our customer we developed a lot of customised procedures to deal with the physical handling of such large windmills. Despite several delays in production we were at the end able to get the cargo to its building place safely and in proper time and our customer was at the end very, very happy with our service."

The next JAS project in cooperation with this customer will involve the transportation of ten windmills of the same type described above to a reef in a lake in Sweden. The towers will be placed on concrete foundations in the lake and on the reef. "We do look forward to it" says Johan Bjorklund.
