Oversize cargo demands heavy planning and careful handling

January 18, 2008

The windmills will be built on the cliffs on the Swedish coastline; fully erected, the towers will be over 100 meters high, with a rotor diameter of almost 90 meters, and will generate 3 megawatts each. The transport is the first in a series of shipments involving all parts manufactured in Sweden as well as in Finland and in Poland. Due to the size of the cargo, the streets of several small cities had to be completely blocked during the transport.

The windmill wings - 44 meters long and 4 meters wide - were transported using special trailers from the southern part of Poland through Germany, and by ferry to the south of Sweden and then onward to the assembly site, approximately 110 km north of Gothenburg.

The first part of the transportation project took place between 8th January 2008 and 14th January 2008; the windmills were safely transported to the site where the windmill towers are to be erected.

"A lot of planning has gone into this project. Together with our customer Dynawind AB (part of the Finnish company Winwind), we started to plan the logistics of the project in May 2007" says Johan Bjorklund, Regional MD of JAS in Scandinavia.

The scope for JAS includes all transport moves from the respective factories in Finland, Poland and Sweden to under hook at site in Sweden and will involve not only special trailer transports but also three complete charter vessels including loading and unloading of the vessels in the ports as well as delivery to the site under the supervision of JAS.

In late February 2008, the three charter vessels will load their cargo and arrive in the port of Lysekil within one working week.
Large projects like this require heavy planning ahead of the work to be performed but nothing is too big to be handled or serviced by the JAS Worldwide organisation.

Further information on this project will follow.
