JAS Project Division transports heavy machinery from Hong Kong to Cartagena.
The Brazilian construction company Construcoes e Comercio Camargo won two bids totaling $450 million and are responsible for the construction of the Porce III Hydroelectric Plant near Medellin, Colombia.
According to Camargo Correa, the 660-megawatt facility will start operating in 2010. The company estimates the total project will cost $900 million, of which $200 million will be financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (BID), with Empresas Publicas de Medellin (EEPPM) contributing the remainder.
JAS Forwarding, via its specialized project division, has been appointed by this company to export one 46.0m tons drill rig from the Port of Hong Kong to the Port of Cartagena, Colombia.
Four JAS offices (Hong Kong, Houston, Cartagena and Sao Paulo) worked closely together to bring this project to completion.
"Due to the dimensions of cargo, it was impossible to accommodate the piece into a 40’ Flat Rack or Platform container. Notwithstanding, it was economically non-feasible to position a break bulk vessel in Hong Kong to bring the cargo directly to the port of destination.
After further evaluation, we found a solution both economically and operationally feasible, consisting of loading the cargo onboard of a barge in Hong Kong, positioning the barge alongside of a break bulk vessel that was positioned midstream Hong Kong bay, sea-freight the cargo up to Houston, perform the in-bound on-forwarding of cargo from the berth where vessel arrived up to the loading berth that brought the cargo to the Port of Cartagena.", said Ivan Rodrigues - Project Manager responsible for the negotiation and fixture of cargo with the customer.’’
