JAS Sweden works with Maersk Line to transport huge tank
In early December 2008 a huge gas tank (75,200 kilograms, 23,6 meters by 5,0 meters by 5,40 meters) was to be shipped from Sweden to Japan for a JAS Sweden customer.
The gas tank was sold under FOB terms out of Gothenburg: Maersk Line was the nominated carrier.
Carriers today mainly handle containers, so the Swedish team of Maersk turned to JAS Sweden for the extra ordinary handling required by the project. This was convenient because JAS was also the forwarder handling the FOB arrangements for this shipment.
The scope of work was out of the ordinary: to deliver the tank on a special hydraulic trailer alongside the ship, and to lift it onboard with one of the container cranes onto a special bed made by empty 40-foot flat racks.
JAS Sweden sat down with the carrier and the stevedores in order to calculate how to accommodate the shipment and to reconfigure the port's cranes in order to safely handle the big tank.
Through one of its partners, JAS arranged a special spreader for heavy lifts and was at the disposal in the port while loading.
JAS also had their own personnel in the port attending the handling from the trailer at ship side to onboard the vessel as well as arranging blocking and bracing onboard in a carefully orchestrated procedure planned by JAS and the carrier-/-stevedores.
How did it turn out?
"Well, without damages and troubles, just the way our customers are used to being treated while using JAS," says Johan Björklund, who is responsible for the JAS subsidiary in Scandinavia.
"We are quite happy to be in the position to offer our knowledge not only to the customers" continues Johan; "but also to be able to extend our knowledge even to our vendors and in particular also when it pleases our customers like in this case".
With JAS Sweden, customers can rely on over 315 years of forwarding experience under one roof; we not only handle shipments of containers but we are also proud to say that we can assist in a variety of handling situations involving huge products.
JAS Sweden today is well known in the Scandinavian market for exceptional handling of Out of Gauge cargo, which is an important component of our yearly performance.
